2 Netflix watches this weekend, #Alive and The Babysitter.

I thought #Alive was fantastic. Zombie flick that dove head first into the action and kept me interested throughout. Really fun movie.

The Babysitter I've never quite had the urge to watch but finally went for it and enjoyed it more than I was anticipating. Like Home Alone where people are killed. Good mindless watch.
I also watched #Alive recently. I must say that South Korea is kicking the USA's ass in zombie movies recently!

Good zombie lore in a very bare bones plot. Guy in apartment witnesses the zombie outbreak from his apartment window, which is already his modus operandi as he is some sort of video game content provider. He just hangs in his apartment rarely trying to do too much as any noise attracts the fast moving z's. He does see some pretty grusome stuff from his balcony though. Eventually a girl in the apartment across from him makes contact and they communicate as well as they can. Eventually they are forced to make an escape after water and food start running out.

Very simplistic but it works well. A bit of an homage to Rear Window with the guy just watching events unfold but he is unable to intervene.

The good:
*Well paced. The story moves along nicely. You'd think the generally one room setting might bog it down but not really imo.
*The zombie fxs are really good. They don't over-the-top it too much but are very consistent and unsettling.
*Same for the good gore fxs!
*Direction of the action is very good. The rest is ok but is secondary anyways.

The bad:
Not too much here, but...
*Character development is lacking. They try to give the main some backstory but don't give you the details to make it significant.
*The ending is a bit "Meh". Rather abrupt and basically just a conclusion of rhe escape.

The part that bothered me the most was that his apartment door had one of those kickstandy lock things at the bottom but he never bothers to use it! He puts his refrig and furniture in front of the door but can't at any point flip down the little foot thing, even when a bunch of z's are pounding at it. It is a nitpicky point but I was yelling at him every time I saw it.

So, again, very bare bones plot (escape!) but it works very well. A must see for zombie aficionados, and generally recommended for all horror fans.

Watched 3 this weekend, all underwhelming unless you're desperate for a horror fix.

Apollo 18, I'd heard from plenty of people that this was a snoozefest and it was. Interesting enough concept but the found footage did not work here and no truly terrifying moments. 2/10

Mercy Black, slow burn. The "scary" moments didn't really arrive until late in the movie. It took it's sweet time getting to the point of who/what Mercy Black was. I think they were really trying really hard for is she truly schizophrenic or is it real and it wound up being more dull and confusing than frightening and frustrating. 4/10

Emelie, had a pretty interesting premise. Unknown babysitter turns out to be a psycho. The child actors were actually pretty decent which helped. The pacing of this movie really killed it for me. It seemed like they would stay on certain scenes too long and then rush through 10 others. You know what's happening pretty early and they still drag the reveal for far too long. It's a weird movie, reminded me a bit of Orphan. 5/10

Agreed on the rating and generally everything you wrote. Lots of nitpicky things to find but it is what it is. Still great effects, good pacing, and a satisfying finish. The eyeless zomb was freaky as hell! And all of the zomb movements with the bone snapping sound fx is just unnerving. Watching that first dude become infected in his apartment was wild!

Some nitpicks off the top of my head:
  • Z's able to track down & pinpoint a noise from way down the hallway, or even knowing which level a gunshot came from. That's just dumb.
  • Girl booby-traps her front door, but doesn't even close the blinds on the window over her kitchen sink that is pretty much right next to the door?
  • After discovering that neighbor's survivalist stockpile he only takes a couple walkies, jacket, food, and some flashlights? Probably took something else, but seriously considering all the shit they had you would think he woulda made it more of a priority to make that his home base. I woulda battled that 1 Z to the death to take ownership of that apartment.
  • Why did nobody ever try to scale the balconies outside their windows to look into the apartments next door? Seemed like a really easy thing to do. Especially considering the girl made it known she was a pro climber. Probably could have scaled the rails all the way around to the guy's apartment instead of repelling down to a suicide run to meet up with the guy.
  • That fireman zomb climbing that rope was a little unfeasible. If he was capable, then why didn't any of the other 50-100 down in the parking lot grab the rope after him?
  • Not sure how the water got cut off but the power stays on? Even when they are carpet bombing nearby?

I'm sure there's more lol. I know I can appear to be a little demanding with movies when posting about them, but it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy them even if I dissect everything. I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Very worth the watch and would watch it again any time it was on.

Top 10 is tough but Dawn of the Dead (2004) is number 1 with 28 Days Later a close 2nd. Night of the Living Dead closes out my top 3, still a very watchable movie.

Saw this a couple weeks ago. When I read the plot I was thinking the same, really this guy is just in his apartment the entire movie. I enjoyed it a lot! Very simple but it worked.

If I posted the entire list of Zombie movies that I have watched it would probably be over 100 movies easy. That list of 60+ is just what I was able to rattle off the top of my head lol.

But yea, the quality is always a concern with Z-flicks. I'd say roughly 10-20% are actually worthwhile. And that's being overly-favorable towards some very flawed films lol.

Last I checked these were on there (I recommend them all):

#Alive (2020)... brand new on there and definitely worthy of a watch if you don't mind subtitled foreign films.
The Girl With All the Gifts (2016)... Very unique film. Sort of slow burn, but great story & worth the time.
Train To Busan (2016)... Another foreign subtitled film. But awesome.
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)... One of the better RE's before things went off the rails.
Here Alone (2016)... Not great but ok. Screamer zombies are always terrifying, but more character conflict than zombie conflict.
Life After Beth (2014)... Zombie teen comedy... Pretty funny in moments, and worth of a throwaway watch.
The ReZort (2015)... Cool idea, but typical shoddy execution for Z movies. Another worthwhile throwaway watch.

Others on Netflix (not recommended):
Cargo (2018)... Very slow, very depressing, not exciting at all.
Day of the Dead (2018)... This one was a mess, but good fx. I was pretty drunk when I watched so not sure I can recommend.
Doom: Annihilation (2019)... Garbage

Some decent Zombie TV Series on there as well. Black Summer was ok. Unique writing how they intertwine & unfold the story, but pretty crappy execution & acting.

Pretty good list to start from.

Does Re-Animator (1985) count?
I'm a big Lovecraft fan and this was pretty gory/campy when it came out.
Especially the end sequence with the intestines, among other things....

And what about Dead Alive (1992)? Maybe it goes by another name on here?
This was directed by Peter Jackson (yes, LOTR Peter Jackson), that was pretty gory for its time, but had the memorable scene in a graveyard with a priest that knows martial arts. "I kick ass for the lord....".

Honestly, though, you could probably break these down even further into comedies, slow zombies, and fast zombies.

There will always be a place in my heart for Army of Darkness, but that has less to do with that being a zombie movie, and more to do with Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, the Three Stooges,, throwaway quotes, etc.

Yes & Yes... All the Re-Animator films belong. Can't believe I forgot those! Been a minute since I've watched those! I don't know if I recall Dead Alive, aka Braindead. It looks familiar so I'm sure I watched it at 1 point or another. A martial artist priest should be something that sticks out in memory but it doesn't lol.

Zombie movies have a lot of different categories. Viral vs. Undead. Fast vs. Slow Zombs. And even larger genre scopes like Comedies, Action, Drama... Although the Dramas I akin to movies like Maggie, Cargo, or even Carriers that are somewhat dreadful to watch (Carriers was decent, just not as exciting), as compared to the more traditional sense of the genre. I'm not as big of a fan on those movies.

Another good yet flawed film I liked was Open Grave (2013). A very unique twist on the Zombie genre.

Ok then! I just watched Verotika which is written, and directed by metal icon Glenn Danzig, and I feel a bit dumber and dirtier for it.

I have heard rumors that this is the horror equivalent of The Room but it appears to be far worse (though I haven't seen The Room, it gets a 3.7 on imdb while Verotika gets a 1.9 which is the worst rating I think I've ever seen!)

This one "has it all". Horrible acting, horrible direction, crappy fxs, incomprehensible storylines that go nowhere. It really is one of the worst things I have ever seen (with apologies to Ulli Lommel's Zombie Nation). So exactly what do we have?

Glenn obviously watched some RZ movies and thought "Hey, I could do that!", then he went around Las Vegas (where he infamously lives in an all-black mansion surrounded by dead vegetation) and hire up a bunch of strippers and pørnstars (literally) and make a decent horror anthology. Sadly, he was oh so wrong.

The movie starts with a stripper in the Cryptkeeper type role telling us about the different tales. I'd rank on her for having no screen presence or menace required for the role but she isn't any worse than anyone else.

The first story is about a hooker whose id takes actual physical form as a big albino man spider that kills anyone that crosses her (and others) by snapping their necks. Oh, her nipples are eyes that can cry for no reason, and it is set in France, which makes for horrible accents all around. "Highlights" are the lead's bloated collagen lips, and some bad wardrobe issues with the man-spider (obvious head mask line not covered with make up, piece of costume dangling off of crotch). Some creepy visuals and fxs but overall it is baffling bad.

The 2nd story is about a stripper with a scarred up face goes around cutting the faces off of women and wearing them during her act, though she covers her face for said act so I don't get the point. The cops chasing her have horrible dialog and can't act. The main cop is particularly horrible. She slices off some faces, gets shot by cops, runs away, then somehow ends up stripping in the same club with big bullet scars on her torso. But hey, that's not at all suspicious!

The 3rd tale is a retelling of the Elizabeth Bathory legend about the royalty that bathed in the blood of young virgins to retain her youth. Of the 3 stories this one has by far the best in costuming, location, sets, etc. The acting is still bad and the tale really goes nowhere. Sadly despite being the best fxs, sets, costuming, etc it is also the most boring of the 3 tales. While it could maybe be argued that the first 2 are "So bad, they're good" this last one is more yawn than anything else.

It's just sad what Glenn decides to leave in the movie. The aforementioned wardrobe issues, horrible dialog, and even worse acting are just the tip of the iceberg. The lighting is flat, and often too bright. One scene has a fully visible mic pack strapped to a stripper's leg as she ascends the stairs. Other scenes have crew members clearly visible in background shots (why leave those in? Cut the shot, or re-shot, or crop the image! F'n LAZY!!). At one point a ragged piece of broken sheetrock covers half of the ceiling area it is supposed to. UGH! Many scenes just drag on with nothing happening for 30 seconds after the director should have cut, which leads to actors doing nothing, or glancing at the camera in confusion. Also, and I can't reiterate this point strongly enough, DON'T HIRE YOUR FAVORITE STRIPPERS AND P-STARS AS ALL OF YOUR MAIN ACTORS!!

Was there anything good? Well, some decent sets in the Bathory tale, but other than that......gore and bweebs! Lots and lots of bweebies, so Chef might appreciate some of it?

As a metal fan, I have enjoyed Danzig's music somewhat but I've never been a big fan persay. But please, please, please never, ever let him direct again!

1.5 outta 10. Avoid unless you are looking for a trainwreck.

If you want a kinda good Danzig horror tale, watch the "When Gods Kill" video instead. Goth/Geiger/Lovecraft influences on a pretty cool song. It also has bweebs!

If you haven't seen Peter Jackson's Dead Alive / Braindead, then stop whatever you are doing and watch it now!

Quite frankly, I can't imagine you haven't Face. It is an all-time horror classic! My first thought is that, considering the width and breadth of your horror knowledge, you are just momentarily blanking due to alchohol killing off a specific part of your brain.
