Honestly I can understand this. I come home from work I would rather watch a dumb movie and chill. If it's a good movie is going to draw me in full focus and after work,I just ain't up for that Shit.
I have like 3, maybe 4 movies I have started to watch a hundred times but may have only seen the ending a dozen times. Because they are relaxing and help me crash.

Galaxy Quest, Joe Dirt, Quarantine, Limitless.......

So!

Even though I have never played golf in my life, I must ask for a mulligan.

Having watched Alien:Covenant sporadically, I commented prematurely.

Had the time to watch it from start to finish today, uninterrupted.

This movie is brilliant. The pacing (which I mistakenly called slow) is perfect for establishing both characterization and story line.

When the horror begins...it never ends, perhaps not even with the end of the movie. I am sometimes prone to hyperbole, but I must say that I am hard pressed to find a Ridley Scott movie that I enjoyed more. It is that good.

Perhaps a few quibbles...I was reminded a bit too much of one of Sigourney Weaver's signature lines during the climax, although I also got the clear feeling it was done out of reverence.

My other quibble? I couldn't help but picture Danny McBride as one of these characters:

So many questions about the timeline and way too many spoilers to discuss the movie presently, I think...however, I have a feeling we'll be doing that in the future.

The Alien saga has taken on a legendary status now.

In my humble opinion, of course.

And the BoobMeter never even raised a nipple.

Not sure if this is considered horror but I watched The Belko Experiment last week and loved that movie way more than I thought I would. While highly unlikely, it's something that probably has a remote chance of happening with people starting to get microchipped today.

BTW, has anyone here seen Morgan or A Cure for Wellness? I was thinking of checking them out (the previews for it on The Belko Experiment made them look interesting).

I did a review of it a couple of weeks at. It most definitely falls into a specific subgenre of horror.

I think I have it a 6.5, but could bump it to a 7 easily except for a couple of pretty stupid things (WTF is a company recruiting Americans to go to Columbia to begin with? It would be far easier to just use the locals for the experiment.....and why the big, expensively trapped up building? You could easily perform the same experiment for much, much cheaper in other ways. Etc.)

Watched this on Syfy this morning:

Devil (2010) - 5 people are trapped on an elevator and one of them is the devil! But which one?

Sounds a little dopey, but I found it to be a good psychological thriller with some decent scares and twists. It is worth a look.

Guess who wrote that story?

Definitely felt the same way about McBride. He has always been in the comedy genre so this was the first I had seen him out of that genre which made it feel like he didn't fit. Same could be said for Reynolds, but I've seen him in lots of different genres (Buried, Blade 3, Self/Less, Safe House, Deadpool, etc etc) so it wasn't as odd.

I've watched a few movies throughout the past week:

The Thing (2011) I'd rate this around 2.5-3 out of 5 stars. It was decent but the CGI really took me out of it quite a bit. Although I did like how they tied it together at the end with the John Carpenter movie.

The Mist - I'd rate this 3.5/5 stars. Not quite as good as I remembered it but I still enjoyed it. With three actors from The Walking Dead, you could tell that Frank Darabont liked working with them enough to cast them inthe show. The best part I thought was the ending. That's what sticks out to me most of all about the movie.

Morgan - 2.5/5 stars. It wasn't too bad but I thought that the ending became predictable pretty quickly during the movie.

Summer Camp (2015)


Not sure why this movie worked for me, but it did. For most of you this film is a typical cliché-ridden virus/slasher type film chalked full of stereotypes, but it ends up being unpredictable & entertaining! As the film progresses it becomes a lot more enjoyable so stick with it! In a nutshell an inexplicable viral outbreak turns anyone exposed into a raging murderer for brief periods of time. What isn't apparent at first is how it is contracted, but you soon find out and that's when most of the fun begins. The roller coaster ride of guessing who's infected & who's the victim at any given time makes for a fairly suspenseful film. And for those of you that love gore then this film is for you! Lots of blood, guts & brutality! And surprisingly it never gives off any cheesy B-movie vibes. The acting was good. In the beginning you're introduced to the typical young & attractive group of victims and you think to yourself that you're in for a stereotypical cattle ride whereby you could care less who lives or dies, but you actually start to connect with the characters throughout the film which adds to the suspense. It's pretty rare to have that happen, so kudos to the writers & director. Some of the filming styles during action scenes left a lot to be desired as some of the action gets obscured due to shaky filming. The wife thought it was a little nauseating. Overall this movie wasn't spectacular or ground-breaking, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. If you're a fan of viral/zombie type movies then I would definitely recommend giving this film a try!

Cheap thrills, but still entertaining! 7/10

I also finally was able to watch The Devil's Candy as per the recs here. A good horror film with very good acting and a great soundtrack. Character develppment was very good. However I wished for a bit more depth into the story.

One question: At the end he started uncovering what I can only assume was cases with bodies in them. Is that correct? And what was the symbolism of the light shining down?

Just watched this movie over the weekend (review coming shortly) but you'll have to excuse me if I sound confused since I had polished off some booze before & during my viewing! I may have to give it another go before I can properly understand some of it.

Bodies in the luggage/cases... I have to assume so. Since we are briefly shown various pieces of luggage during Ray's kill scenes we are forced to assume so. Chops 'em up, and bag's 'em. What I didn't understand was why he was burying them at that grave only to dig them up again & bury them all over again? I guess that further alludes to his insanity or possession? Vice versa? Might have missed something there, but it didn't make sense to me. Maybe it was his way of putting the bodies/souls into hell or something to do with his sacrificial routine?

Didn't grasp any symbolism with the light shining down either.

The Devil's Candy (2015)

Side note... IFC Midnight has come a long ways. Gone are the days of that true independent B-film vibe that you get at the film festivals. Now you get something closer to blockbuster horror in regards to better budgeting, but what I love most is they haven't forgotten their styling. Their writing always has & always will set them apart.

As for the movie... Loved it. It started & progressed really well with loads of suspense. The movie in general had good pacing as it never felt boring. Really liked the dark atmosphere that it had. Great production values in everything from the score to the lighting elements. Shout out to Sean Byrne, the director & sole writer of this film. Some of you may remember his film The Loved Ones, which I thought was really good as well. He definitely has established himself as a director to keep an eye on! This movie also had stellar acting. Pruitt Taylor Vince (Ray) was particularly unsettling. Everything about his character was disturbing & made my skin crawl. His voice all the way down to his subtle body language made you feel very uncomfortable. All of the main characters were likable too, even though they were all oddly unique in their own right. I loved how they incorporated an artist character to provide great symbolism. My main gripes with the film were character stupidity & the climax. They went hand in hand. Some moments were a little painful to watch. For example when the dad had the drop on Ray with the baseball bat but somehow managed to shit his pants at the sound of the gun going off suddenly causing him to turn tail & run. That part made my blood boil. There were other moments but I'll leave you with just that 1 example. But those gripes are nitpicking and the overall movie was great! I'd highly recommend it as well!

Dark & unsettling, just how a satanic horror film should be... 8/10

47 Meters Down (2017)


Where The Shallows failed, this one succeeded. If anyone remembers my review on that movie, you know how I hated the practicality. This film delivers a much more realistic experience. Nonetheless both movies were just as entertaining with each having different downfalls. Inherently I must compare these 2 movies since they are the most recent shark attack films, aside from Sharknado 5 which I will ignore for obvious reasons (apologies @DJ). And I had read rumors of this film delaying its release (shelved for almost a full year) directly due to The Shallows coming out in June of last year. This is the latest horror movie from writer/directer Johannes Roberts, recently known for The Other Side of the Door. This movie benefits quite a bit from the fact that much of it plays out in real time since one of the most terrifying elements is the depleting oxygen tanks which forces you into that race-against-time scenario. That element mixed with Sharks, provides an incredible amount of suspense. And as you can imagine that sort of thrill ride never diminishes. Another great element to this film is in the ocean floor setting. The low visibility provides a great claustrophobic feel, and the characters being trapped by sharks in a metal cage further adds to it, as well as to the tension. The actors in the lead roles were ok, but let's be honest, they didn't need to be great. The nature of a thriller such as this pushes acting to the back-burner. I enjoyed this film a lot more than I did with The Shallows, but it is not a very well rounded film. Simply put it is an entertaining thriller, no more no less. This movie was never previewed as anything different, so in that regard it most certainly delivers. I enjoyed the twists even if it was a little predictable. But there's really only a couple different outcomes to this venture so it wasn't hard to take a stab & get it right.

Entertaining shark thriller! 7.5/10

WTF! (2017)


In a nutshell this film was a run of the mill teenage slasher flick with a poor excuse for a climactic twist. Ignore the good reviews being plorsted around the internet. This was a cookie-cutter experience loaded with stereotypes & clichés. The writing was mindless & the acting was laughable. I found myself rooting for everyone's death, including the antagonist. This was a poor excuse for a cash grabbing slasher film. It tries to sell off sex appeal, but it doesn't even deliver in that regard. Only a couple of faint blips in the BM scale that weren't enough to register anything. And it doesn't even give us much gore! That alone pissed me off the most. It could have at least made for some alcohol-induced entertainment! Only 1 of the deaths was enjoyable to watch. About the only pro I can give this film was the cinematography was decent. But that's not worth getting excited over. Don't waste your time with this nonsense.

Pathetic excuse for a teenage slasher flick... 3/10

Watched Knock Knock, which is written and directed by Eli Roth, and stars Keanu Reeves. At least I watched most of it, while I periodically skipped forward due to the ridiculous crappiness of it all.

Keanu is an annoying dad whose family goes away for the weekend, leaving him to work at his expensive house in the hills. During a rainstorm there is a knock on the door and two hot young babes plead their way in claiming they are lost. After 20 minutes of flirting and lame conversation, they attack Keanu (in a good way). However, the infidelity takes a bad turn as the two hotties turn into Fatal Attraction psychos.

It is basically every pørn movie set up ever followed by crazy chicks who behave badly and can't act. On top of that, Reeves is at his wooden worst, which works for John Wick but not here.

Despite good production values, nothing else works here. Acting is bad. Dialogue bad. Story goes nowhere. Roth should be ashamed to put this dreck on the screen.

I'll go 3 out of 10 for two good looking babes who aren't afraid to show off their ass(ets). Avoid.

Unfortunately the terms "abject stupidity" and "Keanu Reeves character" are uttered in the same sentence far to often so I didn't feel it necessary to state it!
