On a related note, I remember going to see the Mariners play the Yankees and basically telling my wife "if you want to see a good at bat, pay attention to this" when Edgar came up to lead off the 2nd.

He watched five pitches, none of which were terrible, and then hit the sixth one off the top of the wall in LF. Anecdotal bullshit, I know, but that's how I'll always remember Edgar. Ended up being a great game too

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees Box Score, August 9, 2003 | Baseball-Reference.com

Any game the Yankees lose is a great one.

Rose should be in. Even if you have to put up neon lights he bet on baseball. Let every one know his mistakes and shame. He still did more than enough on the field...with out PEDs.
But...but...its ok that every player his era and 30 years before took speed pills. That is laughed off..but so many players in the hall were hyped up on speed when they played. It was thought to be ok.....wtf

He should get in after he's dead, just like he agreed to.

Can you quote the rule that existed at the time making speed illegal in MLB?

He didn't agree to that. He agreed to a "permanent ban" from MLB. Which did not include a permanent ban from the HOF. That rule the HOF has, preventing players on the permanently ineligible list from being on the ballot, was not put in place until after Rose signed the agreement.

So Rose never agreed to be a lifetime ban from the HOF like you suggest.

It has nothing to do with PEDs. Idk why people bother bringing that up with Rose.

They bring it up because he didn't do them. As if that makes him some sort of a saint.

Should he be in? Probably.

Do I care? No.

Plus this creepy shit about him having relationships with minors back in the 70s suggests that they have another reason to keep him away from the game. As if he hadn't given them enough.

Don't really want to make this thread about Rose, but I'm confused.

Knowing now that Rose DEFINITELY gambled baseball, including on his own team, do people really think he wasn't popping the same pills as a player that pretty much everyone else was taking at that time?

I think it's because he wasn't a power hitter (and be honest, look at him) that there was no possible way that he could have done PEDs:

Alex Sanchez was the first player suspended by MLB for steroids. He hit 6 HRs in his 1600+ PAs.

Pete also counted known (and convicted) steroid users/dealers among his friends. You know that, right? That's not hard evidence of anything of course, but it puts me in an area that's a little less sure than "no possible way".

Im just playing devil's advocate. He very easily could have. It's how his fans rush to his defense.

Edgar is like top 35 all time OPS and David Ortiz is easily going to get in. It's BS if Edgar doesn't. That said, if he gets in I feel like instead of his amazing batting it'll be because they want to make a case for DH and make David an auto first balance. I mean Jesus, Edgar had an award named after him for ALL DHs, and since the NL will likely move to the DH position anyway.. put it the fuck on there. If Edgar doesn't get in and ANY other DH does, the voting rules need to be changed.

And if Edgar played for the Yankees or Red Sox (or any other major market or east coast team), he'd already LONG been in.

Mario Mendoza should be in the HOF!
