Omar doesn’t deserve it at all. He was a straight-up compiler and was probably the 6th or 7th best player on some of those stacked Indians teams in the 90’s. He was very good, but not HOF.
Like Ozzie it was an absolute pleasure to watch him play shortstop. That’s hall of fame worthy. Brooks Robinson’s bat was no better

His post season numbers were terrible in a small sample…..Mariano was actually better in the post season and faced a DH his entire career in a pretty strong AL East…..
Facing a DH as a closer means exactly nothing. How many times will a closer face a pitcher hitting in the ninth with the game on the line?

Meh. That’s a pretty low standard, honestly. It was also a pleasure to watch Nomar Garciaparra play. And he had a much higher ceiling than Vizquel did and actually put up some serious numbers and HE doesn’t deserve to be in the HOF, either.

Andruw Jones

Highest fielding WAR of all time at his position and it’s not close.

400 HRs

Players get in all the time based on nothing but their bat. Best defensive CF of all time deserves to be in.

By this metric neither do Brooks or Ozzie. Sometimes you just gotta watch ‘em play

I did watch Vizquel play. I watched a lot of him, actually. He was a good player. I never once viewed him as a HOFer, though.
For the third time he’s every bit as deserving as Ozzie and Brooks

Ok to be fair Ozzie had a lot more WAR so I retract that one. I get Viizquel not making it, I just felt like he was watching him

Despite their careers overlapping a bit, I feel like they both played in different eras. Not only did Smith have a higher OPS+, but the average hitting SS was worse than during Omar's career. Ozzie kills Omar on the basepaths. I think those two things put Ozzie well ahead even if we were to assume their defense was equal (and I wouldn't)

Ozzie stole 176 more bases while getting caught 19 fewer times. He was also far better at taking extra bases (53% to 42%)

the other problem with vizquel... maybe the eye test told us that he was the best defensive SS of his time... but dWAR, actually has Ripken being better... now again, i dont know if ripken was better or not...

but the point is, if you are not the best in a non "HOF essential stat", then you really have no shot to make it if that is all you have...

Disclaimer: ***This is not an argument for HOF inclusion***

I'm surprised Ian Kinsler got so little love. The fact that he couldn't get even 5% of the votes needed to stay on the ballot, while guys like Omar Vizquel, Francisco Rodriguez, Jimmy Rolliins, David Wright, Felix Hernandez, Torii Hunter and Dustin Pedroia did is ridiculous. Not saying all these guys should have been eliminated from ballots as well, just don't know why their numbers were so much better (most of them weren't) that they got some traction and Kinsler did not.

the player i was surprised most about who got no love was Hanram... he was actually one of the best players in baseball for a while...

no, he is nowhere near a HOF, but id like to have seen him at least make it to NEXT years ballot...

I was surprised that he got not a single vote. Yet guys like Carlos Gonzalez, Adam Jones, Brian McCann and Russell Martin got votes. The HOF ballot is always an interesting adventure into "what were they thinking?"

I wish just one of the nine voters who selected Russell Martin would give a rationale for that vote. What made them decide to vote for him over, say, the 22 players on the ballot who were probably better than him? I understand that the character clause might give pause to selecting A-Rod, Beltran, ManRam and Pettitte but that there are still 17 players better than Martin and only 10 spots on the ballot.

I'm assuming those are votes from hometown reporters just throwing them a bone, knowing that they have no chance of making it.
