The things that you saw are part of the reason he isn't a sure thing. I'd say it will take a couple of years to see whether he is a good pick or not. I am hoping for the best.

Does this mean that you are in favor of sitting this highly drafted QB as much as possible? It's actually a very close vote, 8 in favor of starting him, 9 against. Of the 6 who voted "maybe" I wonder which way it would go if the question was a mandated "yes" or "no" one?

I'm with Ruz, no way he should start until they are damned sure he is ready.

Just watched the Rose Bowl. His inaccuracy is downright discouraging. Can that be taught? Maybe, maybe not. But it sure would have been nice to see him hitting what he was aiming at more often, he was throwing over the head of guys on WR screens.

Ultimately you let the on field battle decide this question. I believe Haskins would benefit from a year on the bench. If he starts right away opposing teams are going to throw a ton of looks to confuse him, pressure like he hasn't seen before. I believe he would benefit from seeing that on tape and during games just to learn better what he is seeing and how to handle it. If he clearly looks better than Colt Keenun, then let him play.

No offense to anyone here but the vote on here means little to me. This should be Jay and Kevin's decision only. Sadly I think Dan is going to want him to start.

Don't overlook the fact that Gruden is on the hot seat and is probably gone if we don't make the playoffs this year. That will have a direct impact on his decision on who to play. Gruden doesn't have a year to watch Haskins develop. He may not start him game one, but I'd bet if we lose the first couple, Haskins will be playing, damned if ready or not.

Agree completely. We have seen numerous examples in the past where teams wanted to be patient w/ their rookie QB but caved in & put him on the field whether he was ready or not. The Chiefs situation with Mahomes was very unique since A. Smith was good enough (not great) to allow the rookie to sit & learn.

In the case of the Redskins it doesn't really matter what is the best option or what Gruden & company say or even think at the beginning of the season. Pressure & losses have a way of dictating decisions - for better or worse.

I guess we'll just keep trotting black QBs out there until we find one that sticks. I watched another game the other night, Michigan State. Saw pretty much the same thing I saw in the other 3, he is very inaccurate. I am officially concerned.

He only basically played to a significant degree for one season in college. Of course he is going to have issues & need to improve. Do you expect a rookie QB to be fully developed? That is extremely rare. Give this guy a few years & lets see what happens. Again - he has a great attitude & a major desire to learn & improve. Several of the reviews of him have indicated that all of his flaws are very correctable. We will see.

Again this is not a guy who is missing reads, holding the ball too long or other examples of an inexperienced QB. No the thing I saw was his inability to hit was he was throwing at consistently. Just too many missed throws that weren't close to his target. Can this improve? Hopefully. But it's kind of crazy not to have concerns after seeing what I saw over 4 games.

he also has made great throws . he is young , he should get good coaching , lets see what happens before we "get concerned "

lets see what happens before we fall for the hype as well

Those issues were addressed in several of the reviews. A lot of that is related to footwork & other mechanics & is correctable. Again - you are basically looking at video of him in year 1 of playing QB at a higher level. I am not too worried. Now if he has the same issues 2-3 years from now then yes it will be a major cause for concern. He will have some of the best coaching there is with the likes of Gruden, O'Connell, A. Smith, etc so there is real potential for improvement.

A lot of folks believe the this is a make or break season for Gruden (& honestly I was more for not bringing him back this season). People also believe that if they don't make the playoffs or come extremely close that he is history.

However you have to wonder if Haskins development will be factored into any decision in that area. We have seen other young QBs not realize their potential since they go though numerous head coaches, coordinators, etc. I am not stating that this will be the deciding factor but just something that factors into the equation. Hopefully the Skins have decent success next season (not holding my breath because this is more about long term success) so that this is not even an issue.

Accuracy MAY be able to be fixed with better technique/footwork.

I am more concerned about how he handles pressure. He has been praised for his ability to read a defense. Lets see if he can learn to handle pressure because you can believe if the other NFL teams know he has difficulty with it they are going to make sure to bring it.

Yep & only one way to know if he succeeds in that area (as well as other areas) & that is his performance in a regular season game - no practices, preseason games, etc. You bring up a great pt & one of the biggest tests will be - if he starts - how he handles losses and bad performances - both almost a given at some time for the upcoming season.

I will give him a pass or two if he doesn't necessarily handle this well at times (e.g. tries to overcome bad play by pressing & throwing some picks). However they will need to see some progress in this area as the season progresses (again assuming that he plays to a significantly degree).

Haskins is going to experience this as well as video review, meetings etc for hours & hours, day after day, week after week & I don't believe that he is the type that will let off field distractions take up his time & get in his way. This is encouraging - at least to me.

Was talking about on the field pressure …. as in pass rush. He did not handle that well in college.

Agreed!! Handling pressure is by far the bigger issue. Getting the ball out quickly and avoiding sacks/turnovers far out distance incompletions. In fact there are times where incompletions are very good!
