First, let me throw a disclaimer out there. I don't know what the chances are that Haniger will get traded. But, just let me say this: the immediate future of the Mariner outfield is Kyle Leis, Julio Rodriguez, and Jarad Kelenic. I don't know where that leaves 30-year-old Mitch. Certainly not at DH where he might command a $14-216 million salary. I don't want to see him go but, I'm not the guy evaluating dollars in the Mariner finance office.
So should he be traded, where do I think his best landing spots are?
1. Giants. We've seen their farm team talent in spring training. They have a sore need in their outfield. As a contending team, one more power bat may be all they need to propell them deep in the playoffs.
2. White Sox. Long-term injuries to two of their three starting outfielders has left them shorthanded in a year when they have a good shot at winning the AL /Central.
3. Tampa Bay. They need him to hold off the Yankees and Red Sox, and, offensively, their outfield is under-producing.
4. Red Sox. This is a seriously contending team and they have Danny Santana and his .,169 batting average as their mostly everyday CFer.
5. Milwaukee. Probably don'yt have the assets to compete with the big dogs, but they have a need, and they are a strong contender.
And do not know what is going to happen with Mitch. But Dipoto loves to trade and shock. I think there is about a 60% chance he will be traded. He is a solid contributor but he seemingly is not seen by upper management as being part of our future.
