I think you missed my point and several people made my point for me here. The Dallas Cowboys would not have inside information. It either gets disclosed to all based on consent by the patient or it does not. In other words, no one has special Infromation. That was just spin. The point is he may never play in the NFL as the nerve may not get back to where it needs to get or he could be a dominating player.

High risk, high reward. Not sure the pick needed to be made so early and especially by a team coming off a 4-12 season with an older elite quarterback when there is no sensible backup.
Actually, there is special information when the guy did the surgery himself and saw what was inside with his own eyes. He can disclose everything he saw to other doctors, but actually being the one to see it yourself is different. You can't explain to someone how it compared to the other 1,000 surgeries you did in terms specific enough for them to understand it as well as you did. No doctor is going to say in a public forum it WILL heal and get better. But, in a private room he may be a little less conservative with how he words his prognosis. Either way, even after now re-reading your post, it didn't appear that was really your point anyway so perhaps that is why everyone jumped on it.

I do totally agree with your "High risk, high reward" assessment and your point that he may never play in the NFL which is why I would not have picked him in that spot. The knee I think will get better. The nerve is a crap shoot, but personally I feel better about the odds (not much but a little) knowing that the doctor that saw and did everything gave an opinion rosy enough for Jerry to portray as he thinks it will be OK even if that was spin and wasn't exactly what he said. We all know Jerry will hear what he wants and then even more so often twist it to his advantage after the fact, but I have to believe there is at least some truth to the story here.

3rd or 4th round would have been better. I would have taken Spence in the second round. However, I hope Smith proves the doubters wrong and has a long successful career with us. Jerry is just going to always take chances that others won't. It has bit him in the ass almost every time, but he won't ever stop.

Maybe this part sheds some light on the physician's perspective? And Michael says some off the wall, JJ type shit sometimes, too?

Michael Irvin thinks Jaylon Smith can be 'next black Luke Kuechly'

By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

May 4, 2016 2:07 pm ET

Michael Irvin loves the Cowboys. This is no surprise since he won two Super Bowls during his 12-year career in Dallas. You know what else Michael Irvin loves? Jaylon Smith, the Cowboys' second-round pick in last week's draft.

Even by Irvin's typically over-the-top standards, he couldn't gush enough about Smith, who will likely miss the 2016 season after suffering an injury in a January bowl game.

"I'm telling y'all right, I'm telling y'all right now, and I need all the people talking about this Jaylon Smith kid -- I'm gonna tell y'all right ... now," Irvin told G-Bag Nation on KRLD-FM 105.3, a CBS Sports Radio affiliate. "I kept his [draft] card; I got the card right here next to me. ... I'ma hold on to this card, and when I see this kid in Canton, Ohio, I'm going to have him sign it for me. It was one of the greatest thrills of my career to sit and announce that pick, and when he made that pick, when he picked Smith, oh my God! Oh my God! I was off the wall, off the wall. ...

"I know he has adversity in front of him, but I know the kind of dude he is," Irvin continued. "He'll come back. ... The baddest man in the league right now, the baddest linebacker in the league right now, Luke Kuechly, I call Luke Kuechly 'the white Ray Lewis.' I said it myself, Jaylon Smith is gonna be the next 'black Luke Kuechly.' That's what we just got, you understand what I'm saying? ... This dude is bad, for real. This dude would've been a top-five pick also, had he not been hurt."

We understand what you're saying, Mike, even if we're not sure who the current "black Luke Kuechly" is. Either way, Smith has a ton of upside, and he probably would have been a top-three pick if he hadn't been injured. And while the injury scared off 31 teams in Round 1 (the Patriots didn't have a pick), owner Jerry Jones isn't worried about Smith's prognosis.

"We have a firm belief, if you look at the history of injuries like this, that the nerve ultimately fires, some take longer than others," Jones told ESPN's Mike and Mike. "But at the end of the day, we think it will. And then once it does fire, usually it takes about -- our guys say -- from an inch to an inch and a half per month in terms of ultimately healing and getting full feeling back. We feel really good about that.

"[Team physician Dan] Cooper sat us down and walked us through other injuries where the nerve didn't fire right away and then ultimately it did and ultimately they made a full recovery to be the player they had been before the injury."

Michael Irvin is VERY EXCITED about Jaylon Smith joining the Cowboys. (USATSI)

I try to see the glass half full as much as anybody, but not this time. I hated everything about the draft aside from a couple of picks. Elliott better be All Pro to justify this pick in the top 5. The 2nd pick was flat out terrible to ME. Whoever that was earlier that said if we had traded this 2nd round pick for a first next year, that everybody would be happy; I would definitely be happy, because next year we would have two first round picks and depending on the team, it could be a very high pick and these days, teams give a lot for high picks.

As unlucky as this team is with injuries, why take such a stupid risk when you need help NOW? A cursed team like the Cowboys has no business wasting a high 2nd round pick on an extremely high risk player. We not an elite franchise like the fucking Seahawks, Pats, etc right now. This team is in no position to be taking high risks Not with an aging QB. Not with an aging TE. Not while tying the NFL record for fewest takeaways in a season. This team needs help NOW. As far as the rest of the draft, it didn't look as bad as the first two picks, but the Cowboys have a recent history of not hitting on anything after Round 3 so if that continues, this draft could be a huge bust. But it can't possibly be worse than 2009.

I'm hoping you are wrong and I am definitely happier about the draft than you are, but it's hard to argue against some of what you say. I think Elliott will be very good and I hope Smith will get healthy. The guy I most want to see is Collins. I have a good feeling about where this DL can go. But the DBs are tough to be happy about. The Giants have two high priced FAs and still took a rookie at the top of the first round and that is after spending a boatload in FA on defense. Ramsey/Spence was right in our hands and we just let it go...but, I am hopeful this draft will ultimately work out.

I can be talked into getting behind the EE pick. Least he's healthy(knock on wood) and a great prospect. But the 2nd pick was just flat out atrocious. This team just not in a position to take a risk like this. We need players NOW. Romo is 36 not 26.

Howdy Earl...one thing about me, if I don't see the glass half full regarding anything that I give two shits about, I'm a SOB to be around. I have no where to be, so I'm going to do my best to understand the logic. That logic has everything to do with this organization (not just the Crip-keeper) being all in on seeing themselves as the 2014 Dallas Cowboys. They see a relatively healthy team having Romo upright playing 8 in the box 90% of the time. They see a back that makes people miss in the open field with off the charts blocking ability from the runningback position that also does not fumble. Better yet....they know the 2014 defense held up pretty darn good coming off a season where many said they were the worst defense ever. They think they can catch lightning in a bottle again with a smash mouth offense....ignite the whole team...they see Sean Lee and Rolando McClain both somehow playing together the majority of the season and GREATLY benefitting from it over the 2014 version of team defense. They have made these calls as a group....everyone is on board. Rod is all over the Dallas radio talking up the dline "rushmen" they have. This team has doubled down on all the above. It's what they've come up with after the offseason and all their evaluations. LOL....time will tell on all that

as to your second point.....not the team. Jerry F-In Jones is cursed. I truly believe this.

all the best Earl

it's admirable of you and others to pronounce yourselves as dicks in the other thread.
As I said, I am what I am, but thank you for the second.

wouldn't you know...where I grew up, SOB's weren't nearly as bad as being referred to as a dick

took awhile but now we're all pretty clear on who is who here. :suds:

It all comes down to the knee. If he recovers, the Cowboys might have turned a 2nd round pick into another Derrick Brooks . That's the way Coach Rod talks about Smith. If it doesn't, he will be a wasted 2nd rounder, but he wouldn't be the only 2nd round bust in the league, there are 10-12 per year. Worth the shot

I sure love the player IF...
Like many....I woulda waited to the early 3rd but I'm okay knowing they came real close to giving away the 2nd & 3rd for a QB I'm not sure will be more than weeden

May be a better pick than a career b/u TE at that spot, but he will have to see the field for anyone to know

I'm definitely a believer in this team. This team is the division favorite with 16 games from Romo. Just really wasn't a fan of this draft. I hope EE is all that and then some. And you are right about Jerry being cursed. That's pretty much what I meant when I said the team is cursed.

Just saw the team lists J Smith at 245. I thought I read the other day he was like 220??? I guess he is a better option at Mike than I originally was thinking, which is good because maybe Lee stays healthier if we want to keep him out of the middle. Did he lose weight because of the injury?

1) Ezekiel Elliot, RB - A... Safest player in the draft and he's coming into a perfect situation with a great line and other RBS to take the pressure off.

2) Jaylon Smith, LB - B-... Don't really know how to grade this one because he isn't playing this year but I feel good that our team doctor performed his surgery and can give us the inside scoop. I essentially look at this pick as a trade for a top 10 pick next year which is great!

3) Maliek Collins, DT - B-... I like that we have locked down our DT depth but don't think he was the greatest value with this pick. That being said he has a place on this team.

4) Charles Tapper, DE - A... Love this pick! Fast defensive end that had a productive career in college. I love that he can play outside the LT or also play the 2 gap. Very versatile player!

5) Dak Prescott, QB - D... I know all of you are excited about him but the dude has career back up written all over him. Not very accurate, poor pocket presence, doesn't go through his progressions. Looks like Tebow 2.0 to me.

6) Anthony Brown, CB - B... Big CB with good ball skills, I like it.

7) Kayvon Frazier, S - A+... I have a serious hard on for this pick. Great athlete with great football IQ. He's a phenomenal tackler and is an asset on special teams. Definitely the sleeper of the draft

8) Darius Jackson, RB - F... WTF???? wasted pick imo. The only value I see Jackson having is on short yardage plays... but even then he shouldn't get the ball over Zeke or McFadden. I don't understand this pick at all. How many RBS do we need? This kid is never going to get any reps over Zeke, McFadden, Morrissey or Dunbar. DUMB!

9) Rico Gathers, TE - D... I mean the guy hasn't played football since middle school. Just because he was a basketball player doesn't mean he's going to be the next Antonio Gates! But who knows his athleticism might prevail.

Overall - B
I read an article that rated all 32 teams as C or better.
On that scale I'd have to give Dallas an A. Very good draft!!!!!
Playoffs for Dallas with Ezekial Elliot Rookie of The Year!
No more "desperate Romo" I the pocket......
