I don't think you will go back once you add them
You might be right, if the shaft on my 4 hybrid was an inch or two longer, I'd hit it as far or further than my 5 wood.

Depends on the course and weather, wind, etc. I usually play from white, but some of my best rounds, in the 80 range, were from blues.

On a different note, I'm thinking of adding more hybrids to my bag, at least until my shoulders are repaired...they're so much easier to hit.
I have a 3 and a 4, have thought of adding a 5 but can't find one to match what I have.

Haven't looked lately though.

80?! get the fuck out of here with that number.

I'd set it at 90

but I don't think removing distance will help some people.

Exactly.. breaking 80 has little to do with how far you can hit it. It's a target game and straight is much more important than long at the level most amatuers play the game.

I completely disagree. Distance is everything. If I'm hitting a 5 iron to the green when my opponent is hitting a wedge I cannot beat him consistently.

distance certainly helps and can make it easier to hit greens in regulation.

but you can break 80 without hitting bombs

I have a handicap bigger than my age (74). I still tee off from the Gold every hole, every course.
It's taken 20 years to finally be able to hit a driver off the tee with any accuracy. Problem is that I can't hit the ball as far as I could when I was 60.

I play every round with only one goal.............................beat my previous score, no matter where I played.

No golf this week. Temps are already in the 90's and it's only 8:45 am here in Florida. High today? 98.

The argument is not about beating someone who's considerably longer than you, it's about knocking it around in under 80 strokes. But I've played many more guys who were longer than I that I was better than than guys with a better short game than I whom I was better than. Distance always helps though, but I think that becomes more true the better the player. For guys struggling to break 80, we're talking double digit handicappers like myself. I've done it twice ftr.

Agree

I rarely play to beat whoever I am playing against. I play to do better than I have in he past.

Right. If it's a big deal for someone to break 80, then distance is generally not their biggest issue was my point.

I don't actually play golf to beat anyone. I'm out to have a good time and see if I can hit a couple of good shots each round. I also play with persimmon woods and a set of irons that are 60 years old, so the lofts are 2-3 clubs different from modern sets. If I hit one or two pars per round, I call it a good day. Otherwise I'm not even keeping score.

The rest of you can enjoy your dick-measuring contests

breaking 80?
sure, it's been done...
sometime during the Jurassic, I believe.
ever since that one time the goal has been 'breaking 78.'

I occasionally use my dick instead of a driver.

I love the sound those make.

I have a buddy who is like you, doesn't keep score. But he's always eager to tell me how many pars he's made in a round.

I think he's fooling himself. He cares about making pars, but ignores the strokes on holes he doesn't like.

You absolutely know when you've hit it solid with a wooden wood

I pick up my ball a lot. If I haven't holed out in 3 puts, I don't see much need to wait around until I sink it. I don't wanna back play up.

When I'm out with others, I like to play best ball so I'm not holding anybody up. All the NYC courses are always so packed.

Best ball? Isn't that a group game?

Reminds me of a modified scramble we played in last week and mindset of many golfers who struggle with the game. On certain holes, we had to play only one club through to the green, based on a number we rolled on a die.

We had to play a driver through a par 4. After the tee shot, my SIL tees the ball up in the fairway. I told him he couldn't do that. In the past, he's also wanted to count a ball "in" if it caroms off the flagstick.

I blame it on the fact that he's a banker whose company sponsors golf tournaments and scrambles he plays in. They cheat like fuck. I know, because he tells me. I don't get it.
