I don't think it was about Bush getting the ball. It was more about the threat of Bush getting the ball. The kid that stuffed that run, likely has to wait a split second to make sure that Bush didn't get the ball. That probably allows White to get the first down.

Having said that, my view on it is the same now as it was then. If that offense can't get 1 yard on 4th down with the National Championship on the line...they don't deserve to win.

Had that USC team had an average Carroll defense, they’d have won easily. I still think that was the best pro-style CFB offense of all time.
