I find it amusing that the Islanders traded away a 4th round pick for him, and got a 4th round pick back. Not likely that they finish ahead of Buffalo, so their net effect is losing a few spots in the draft for nothing.

Another NYI master stroke. You kinda feel bad, because it's going to be hard to convince folks that they don't want to be terrible anymore. They'll probably have to use home grown talent rather than signing free agents.

How much more than 5.8 million will they offer him?

I'm not sure that they have to offer more honestly.

No offense to you or any other Isles fans, but that team has a bad reputation the last few years, so it may just be that he doesn't want to play for the Isles.

Pegula wasn't kidding when he said that winning a Cup in the next few years is a top priority, and he won't let anything get in his way.

As a lifelong Sabres fan, I am still trying to get use to all this.

Amen to that.

I haven't really looked forward to free agency day in, well, pretty much ever. Now I'm really looking forward to it, and I'm excited about the moves they've already made leading up to it.

If they can get Ehrhoff signed, adding him and Regehr to play with some of the young guys like Myers, Weber, and Sekera could be awesome.

I agree, I am expecting to wake up from an acid trip or from the anesthetic {sp?} from one of the surgeries i've had.

It's obvious that Pegula put's his money where his mouth is.

Would signing him take us out of the running for Richards? There is only so much cap room unless they dump anothey salary.

I would say yes unless they also do a buyout on Kotalik or move somebody like Hecht.

they would play Ehrhoff with Myers right? that would be like Chara/Seidenberg Jr.

Myers struggled to adjust without Lydman ... this would be a very good fit for him

Put Regehr back together with Leopold and that's a solid top-4 defence corps...

I agree with dash. Reunite Leopold and Regehr and put Ehrhoff with Myers. I like those tandems.

If we sign Erhoff it will likely be for around $5.8 million. Currently, during the offseason, the salary cap is $70.73 million. With the $3.9 million in QOs we have extended to our RFAs and the expected $5.8 million salary of Erhoff, the Sabres would have around $7.3 million of OFF SEASON cap space left. IF they decided to attempt a signing of Richards, they would still have the room. IF they landed him, for say a $6 million cap hit, They would have to find a way to shed a little over $5.1 million before October first in order to be cap compliant. Most likely Kotalik would be sent to the minors and Hecht would be moved or also sent to the minors.

The thing with this scenario that bothers me is we are locking all of our money away long term this year when we still have Myers and Ennis to sign next year...

I actually like that scenario. The defense and goaltending shouldn't have any questions asked and the focus would strictly be on generating goals, which they're used to.

I like that, then a strong offensive third pairing with Gragnani, Weber, and Sekera fighting it out to be in the top 6 each night.

I would think if Ehrhoff signs too, that's got to be bad news for Morrisonn, who I imagine they'd try to move then. Sekera, Weber, and Gragnani are all RFA, and I'd think you could all three signed for barely more than what Morrisonn is getting.
