Here the latest from Bobby Mac:

BUF's 10-year, $40M contract with Christian Ehrhoff does not violate any aspect of the CBA is a valid deal in the eyes of the NHL.

So I'll shut up now (lol)

“I was originally going to wait and see what was available on the free agent market,” Ehrhoff said in a team release. “After the Sabres acquired my rights and I spoke with Terry Pegula and (GM) Darcy Regier, I did my due diligence on the team and I was very impressed.

"I called some former teammates and others in the NHL who also had great things to say and I was aware that (former Calgary Flames defenseman) Robyn Regehr had waived his no-trade clause in his contract this week to join the Sabres. My goal is to win the Stanley Cup, and after the offer I received from Buffalo, I believe this is the best place to make it happen.”

If this is true, great signing for Buffalo, and bad move by Ehrhoff.
not really. $18 mill in the fist two years.
$5.6 mill over the first 7 seasons - which is really the working years of the deal. then he's 35 and either walks into the sunset, or plays for cheap.
He probably could have gotten $5.6 per for 7 years from someone, but liked what Buff is doing.
a monster in Myers, a rock in Regher... pair him with any of thoise two will give him some breathing room. Miller in the pipes doesn't hurt either.
good for him, good for them. also good that Detroit didn't get a crack at it.

What a slap in the face to the Isles who reportedly offered a 6 year deal paying Ehrhoff 5.8 million per season.
yup.. at least they got their (diminished) 4th back though.
League may look at this deal. BIG drop off from the starting to ending salary
Salary doesn't drop more than 50% from one year to the next, and doesn't get below $1m at the tail. If I recall correctly from Kovalchuk 101, those three ther big sticking points.

anyways, CONGRATS Buffalo!!! the first big win of the offseason.

Rumor (rumour) is that the Sabres are going to offer Richards a front loaded 5 year, $50 million deal.

Tell EJ Hradek that:

I am smarter than EJ Hradek.
A 50 point defenseman for $4m cap hit? I'd take that every single time.

granted, I don't think he'll get 50 points next year... but he was the most coveted d-man around and Buff kept him from the market with a $4m cap hit. That's a WIN

Year 1: $8M signing bonus, $2M salary; Year 2: $5M SB, $3M sal. That's $18M in 1st 2 yrs, or $15M before puck drops on 12-13 season.

I know I'm kicking a dead horse, but bonuses have nothing to do with the Kovalchuk clause to start. Therefore his actual Salary goes from $2 million up to $4 million and then down to $1 million per season. Thats not a huge swing, and definately not more than a 50% dropoff.

Second, The contract does not take him into his 41st birthday, which would cause the contract to be structured differently. All years before the year a player turns 41 are averaged for the cap hit until that year, and his cap hit inany year that he is 41 or older would be his actual salary.

Third, during a players contract, if he NETS, including bonuses, $5.75 million or more as an average during the 2 highest paid years of his contract, then any years of the contract after the age of 36 have a minimum salary cap hit of $1 million, even if the player is scheduled to make less than $1 million that year. This rule does apply to us, but as his salary never drops below $1 million will have no real effect.

This contract in no way shape or form violates ANY of these or any other rules.

On top of that, how many D-men of this calibre don't play until they are 38, when this contract is up.

We don't have the cap room to offer a deal which will end up giving a player a $10 million cap hit.

With Ehrhoff's new contract, and the qualifying offers we gave our RFAs, we currently have $9.5 million in OFF SEASON capspace that will be reduce by $6.43 million come October 1st.

Unless we have some trades or buyouts or put a couple people in the minors, **cough cough Kotalik and Hecht cough cough** We only have $3 million in space long term.

The buyout period ended at midnight.

So unless they did a buyout that just hasn't been announced yet, those guys only leave through trade.

Kotalik to Florida for a 7th maybe?

Be interesting if the Sabres picked up Drew Miller out of UFA. You could put him on a line that has Gerbe Centering him and Ennis. Be cool to have the Miller Bros on the team.

He looks in line to have a 15-20 goal season this year.
