The fact that they are talking is a positive turn. I find it unsettling that Allen and KCs agent just had their first face to face meeting after 2 years of negotiations.

Mike Jones Mailbag...

Could you definitively say that the one thing holding Kirk Cousins back from a long-term deal on the side of ownership is his win percentage against teams above .500?

— Justin Dickens

No. I can’t definitively say that, because nobody that I’ve talked to has given this as a reason. If that’s a reason in the minds of Bruce Allen and Daniel Snyder, then it’s known only by them. The people I’ve spoken to say that if this is a factor, they aren’t aware of it.

Cousins owns a sub-.500 record as a starter (19-21-1). When facing teams with nine wins or more, he is 2-11, and 5-13 against teams with eight victories or more. But more goes into wins and losses than just quarterback play. Cousins rarely tackles. He doesn’t block, he doesn’t catch the ball and he doesn’t run, outside of the occasional scramble. So, it’s unfair to slap a win-loss record solely on Cousins.

I’m pretty sure Washington’s decision-makers know this. And that’s why — even after last season’s disappointing finale and failure to make the playoffs — Jay Gruden said, “I don’t know what Kirk has to do as a quarterback to prove that he belongs in the National Football League as a starter. I think he had a great year. … Overall, I think the amount of times he dropped back to pass and made some unbelievable throws in some great games, I think he belongs in the NFL as a starting quarterback, that’s for sure, and hopefully it’s here.”

So, what is the holdup? Man, I wish I had something for you. From everything I can gather, no progress has been made, and there aren’t any intense negotiation conversations going on. But Cousins keeps on cranking, working on improving his mechanics and command of the offense and timing with his new receivers. It doesn’t appear that the contract situation is weighing on him at all. We’ll see what happens around July 15, the deadline to get a deal done and avoid the use of the franchise tag. By then, it’s possible that quarterbacks such as Derek Carr and Matthew Stafford will have received contract extensions, and that will give the Redskins a more clear indication of the market value and then prompt them to open up the checkbook and give Cousins a deal that both sides believe he deserves.

I gotta agree with the BurgundyBlog simply because I remember Shefter singing the praises of Allen a few years ago - pumping him up as one of the smartest people in the NFL. Shefter is all about sucking up to NFL people who will talk to him, and Allen talks to him. I doubt there's been any contract negotiations in months between the Skins and Cousins' people.

All I know is about this time last year, Shefter had reported that they weren't even speaking the same language with one another. This sounds better to me

True. And there is also the inclusion of Snyder into the process, be that good or bad.

When the bill is $24M and the black Amex is needed. :D

Synder might just give KC D. Carr type money just to be done with this problem.

Speaking from one of the 50% who wanted to see a long term deal in 2015 ...... I like the sound of this. :D

I agree... since when has Snyder ever cared about paying out big money, or looking like an idiot in doing so? Derek Carr might become the highest paid QB in the league per source and his numbers are comparable in the same ballpark as Kirks.

Carr career: 1055 comp's/ 60.9 comp avg/ 11,194 yrds/ 81 TD's/ 31 INTs/ 87.9 rating
Cousins career: 1025 comp's/ 65.9 avg/ 12,113 yrds/ 72 TD's/ 42 INT's/ 93.6 rating

Carr has been in the league 4 yrs starter in last 3 starting in a total of 47 games.
Cousins has been in league 5 years starter in last 2 starting in a total of 46 games.

I can't color it any different. 24/25 million seems to be the going rate for these type numbers. Snyder I believe wants this headache gone cuz aint nobody coming in here putting up those numbers there.. aint nobody.

Carr is younger than Kc should he should warrant bigger money. Forget the stats. I agree with you that Danny wouldn't care about paying him

Since when has age mattered. So many quality QB's mid to late 30's have succeeded in this league, and in todays powder puff don't hit the QB league some could even play in their 40's.... plus ill say that KC seems to never get hurt. Gets the ball out quick and is rather durable. If he sustains his ability I could see him at QB at the least late in his 30's.

Do you really think Kc is going to get more money than Carr if they are signed the same year?

It will be closely comparable if signed relatively close with each other. Since age is the only thing in Carr's favor he could see slightly more. However, based on play they're very one in the same... at this point. Imo
