I think you have to include Bart on that list. Highly regarded, draft pedigree. Will he bust? Who knows.
If so, he would be on the “current” list with Luciano and Harrison. And if can say he faced lots of troubles on his journey through the minors.

I wouldn’t call Garcia a bust. He is an MLB backup catcher. That is a need.

Looking back at these drafts…

2013 - Tyler Rogers (10-312)
2014 - Logan Webb (4 - 118); Austin Slater (8-238); Beede, Coonrod and Gage might still do something
2015 - Steven Duggar (6 - 186)
2016 - Bryan Reynolds (2 - 59); Caleb Baragar (9 - 275)

2017 and forward are really too early to even judge at this level. Each class still has a lot of prospects remaining. Take particular notice of the 2020 class. All 7 picks are LEGIT prospects, including 3rd rounder Kyle Harrison who looks like the second coming of Bumgarner.

Interesting article in The Athletic by Grant Brisbee today.

Here's how it begins:

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, a Giants first-round pick dove for a groundball and snared it. While still on the ground (and with his belt buckle broken), he flipped the ball from his glove to the shortstop, a fourth-round pick, who fired the ball to first. The first baseman, a fifth-round pick, used every inch of his frame to stretch out for the catch. It was a double play, thanks to video review, and it was an important one. You might have heard of it. Another Giants first-round pick came out later to get the save.

Since that double play, the Giants have drafted 227 amateur players in the Rule 4 Draft. They have combined for 15.4 WAR in the major leagues, but hold on a second: 12.4 of that WAR belongs to Bryan Reynolds, who has amassed all of that with the Pirates. The other 226 amateur players have combined for 3 WAR, and I would rank the top 10 Giants players in that time, except there aren’t 10 of them. So here are the top nine, by WAR:

1. Steven Duggar, 2.5
2. Caleb Baragar, 0.9
3. Andrew Suarez, 0.7
4. Joey Bart, 0.4
5. David Villar, 0.3
6. Conner Menez, 0.0
7. (t) Heliot Ramos, -0.4
7. (t) Sean Hjelle, -0.4
9. Chris Shaw, -0.9

The Giants got more wins above replacement from Joe Panik (a 2011 first-round pick) in his 2015 season than they’ve received from every single MLB Draft pick combined since 2015. It’s fair to say the franchise is in something of a draft slump, possibly as a cosmic punishment for nailing so many drafts in a row.

While I agree the Giants haven’t drafted great in this timeframe, you are talking about CURRENT drafts. Most of them are still living.

2015: No argument from me. Essentially a punt of a draft. Duggar is all there is. Though there is some potential for a few players put together SOMETHING (though likely no studs here) — Bickford, Cyr, Hinojosa, Miller

2016: Reynolds is obviously the class of the class, but the Giants should not be let off the hook for not recognizing what he was and packaging him up in a bad trade. The rest of the class still has potential for some bit players. Really too many still around to list, though I will grant that there are no TOP prospects left (apparently)

2017: Ramos, Corry, Gonzalez (though he isn’t with us any longer)…. Still lots of potential here.

2018: Bart, Hjelle, Villar and a bunch of lottery tix

2019: No blue chippers, but a bunch of nice lotto tix (Bishop, McCray, Aldrete, etc)

2020: I would argue all 7 picks, at this point, look promising. And Auerbach was an UDFA that should be added to this class.

2021: WAY too early to judge, but there is already a potential steal popping up in Vaun Brown (10th rounder).

I have vented about the current regime. But Brisbee is a known troll. And this is a stupid take.

GB has some interesting things to say from time to time. I don't know if this chart will reproduce, but it shows the drafted players who have played in the majors from 2015-2016-2017 drafts. Topping the list are the Astros who have had 30 drafted players play in the majors. The Giants are at the bottom of the list, with 9. It is only one measure, but it IS a measure. And granted that is a three year period, but it is both recent enough and far enough away so the players should have developed by now. The Giants need to do better at drafting and developing players, don't you think?

Villar just started playing in the big leagues and he's already 5th on this list. That's ugly.

When the Giants picked up Colton Welker, I believe @calsnowskier mentioned the idea of grabbing a player with draft pedigree. It reminded me of how many former high round picks the Giants have accumulated in Sacramento. Here is the list of the 28 players whom the Giants acquired in one form or another, who are on the AAA roster (either active or on the IL) and the round, year and team that signed them as amateurs (This list does not include the 12 players either active or on the IL whom the Giants signed as amateurs):
1st round: Shelby Miller (2009, StL), Luis Ortiz (2014, Tex)
2nd round: Isan Diaz (2014, Ari), Wyatt Mathisen (2012, Pit)
3rd round: Bryan Brickhouse (2011, KC), Daniel Tillo (2017, KC)
4th round: Tristan Beck (2018, Atl); Willie Calhoun (2015, LA); Austin Dean (2012, Mia); Taylor Williams (2013, Mil)
5th round: Ka'ai Tom (2015, Cle), Jeremy Walker (2016, Atl), Donovan Walton (2016, Sea)
6th round: Matt Carasiti (2012, Col), Tobias Myers (2016, Bal)
8th round: Jason Krizan (2011, Det)
10th round: Tanner Andrews (2018, Mia)
14th round: Aaron Fletcher (2018, Was)
16th round: Jason Vosler (2014, ChC)
22nd round: Cody Carroll (2015, NYY)
International: Enmanuel de Jesus (2013, Col); Raynel Espinal (2012, NYY), Arquimedes Gamboa (2014, Phi), Jorge Guzman (2014, Hou), Wei-Chieh Huang (2014, KC), Darien Nunez (2017, LAD), Jhonny Pereda (2012, ChC), Angel Rondon (2015, StL)

The Giants have released pitchers Matt Carasiti and Taylor Williams. Both had been pitching with Sacramento.

Giants added a position player to AAA and, shocker, its not a middle infielder. They've signed Andrew Knapp. However, I don't see why the Giants suddenly need a light hitting catcher at AAA. I much prefer Emery and Pereda.

Brown has continued his onslaught in Eugene since his promotion…

He was an older pick just last year, so I am TRYING to keep my excitement in check, but you really can’t ask for more from a 1st rounder in his first pro year, let alone a 10th rounder in his first year.

The Giants acquired LHP Ben Bowden from the Rays yesterday. He isn’t on the 40, so no corresponding move is required. No word on what the Giants sent to the Rays.

The Mrs and I attended the San Jose/Modesto game last night. Some impressions.

1) The Giants won 8-2

2) Modesto scored the first two runs off of Eric Silva in the 2nd, mostly due to McCray's valiant but foolish attempt to make a shoestring diving catch on a liner to center which he missed by, oh, six feet. The ball rolled all the way to the wall for a triple.

3) Eric Silva (2021, Rd 4) looked really good for a 19 year old. He gave up two runs in five innings with eight (8) strikeouts.

4) Ben Madison (2018, Rd 9) was unhittable, and struck out 5 in 2 innings.

5) Ofelky Peralta (FA) pitched a scoreless 8th

6) Jose Cruz (Dominican League) pitched a scoreless 9th.

7) The Giants struck out 16 last night. Modesto did not get a hit after the 2nd inning until the 9th inning.

8) Grant McCray (2019, Rd 3) was 3-5 with two stolen bases making it 25 on the season (8 CS).

9) Carter Williams (undrafted) began the year at Eugene, and didn't do badly. He was sent back to San Jose and his hitting .402 with an OPS of 1.167 in 117 AB. He destroyed a ball for a homer, the first San Jose run last night.

10) Jared Dupere (2021, Rd 13) was 2-4 with an EWS in the 7th to dead center field, no small task as it is over 400 feet.

11) A nice night at the yard. We sat in the shade. The attendance was 531, but that seems inflated!
