They see these guys every day. And the likely determined he had zero chance to make it to Bigs, so he isdepth only. Maybe they needed his spot for one of kids coming in from the draft. Maybe he wanted a fresh start (in the game or out) and since they viewed him as depth, they obliged by letting him go. If you are depth, they probably classify you as simply an employee instead of an asset.

All complete guesses, of course. But a 25 year old putting up good, not great numbers in camp doesnt move the needle for me.
I understand that he was org depth and that he was old for his level. However, I would guess that probably 60% of the minor league players are viewed that way (and that is probably generously low). I just don't understand why continue to keep an org guy who cannot hit his way out of AA, and is taking roster space that someone else could use, over a an org guy who is at least hitting at some level.
It could be that they released him to latch on with another org and indy ball but if he simply wanted to move on from the game he could have just voluntarily retired.

Maybe he did. :noidea:

No, he is listed as released. milb.com is pretty good at listing "voluntarily retired" if that was the case.

But to shift gears, most of the hitters from the 2022 draft seem to off to pretty good starts in their professional careers. It is early, but nice to see.

While the numbers aren’t THAT important, I prefer to see good numbers than bad numbers.

After homering 17 times in 93 games for High-A Eugene while playing major-league caliber defense on the left side of the infield, Casey Schmitt earned a midseason promotion to Double-A Richmond on Aug. 9. He’s had little difficulty adjusting to the new level since making that leap.

In 10 games for the Flying Squirrels, Schmitt is batting .366/.409/.512. He’s yet to homer, but he’s doubled four times and tripled once. For the season, the 23-year-old is now batting .283/.368/.479 in 103 games.

Right-handers Landen Roupp and Keaton Winn were promoted to Double-A Richmond from Eugene on Thursday.

Roupp, a 2021 12th-round pick out of UNC-Wilmington, has made the climb from Low A to Double A in less than a full season. In 48 2/3 innings with Low-A San Jose, he had a 2.59 ERA and 69 strikeouts, with 17 walks. At Eugene, he was even better, posting a 1.67 ERA in 32 1/3 innings with 52 strikeouts and only nine walks. He’s the first member of the Giants’ 2021 draft class to reach Double A. The 23-year-old gets good run on his low-90s fastball and his big bending breaking ball is his best swing-and-miss pitch.

Kyle Harrison, LHP, Richmond: The Harrison hype train continues to run red-hot. Ranked earlier this month by MLB.com as baseball’s 22nd-best prospect, Harrison put together one of his best starts of the season on Wednesday, when he struck out 10 in six shutout innings against Binghamton. He allowed only two hits and didn’t walk a batter. In three August starts, he’s struck out 20 and walked four in 15 innings while allowing just three runs. His Double-A ERA is 2.56 with a 94:30 K:BB in 63 1/3 innings as a 21-year-old. His No. 22 ranking may be underselling his prospect stock.

Trevor McDonald, RHP, San Jose: McDonald, 21, has flown under the radar this season despite a 2.32 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 85 1/3 innings in his first extended taste of full-season baseball. Perhaps he gets forgotten because McDonald lost his first full pro season to the pandemic and then spent most of last season as a 20-year-old in Rookie ball. Nevertheless, the right-hander was considered a key pick in the 2019 draft for the Giants, when he signed way over slot ($800,000) in the 11th round to forgo college. He began this season throwing only shorter outings, but now is regularly going five. On Saturday, he went a season-high six innings, allowing a run on six hits. McDonald has a 1.35 ERA in four August starts stretching over 20 innings.

The Giants signed right-handed reliever Ken Giles to a minor league contract and he’ll pitch for their rookie ball team tonight. He was recovering from Tommy John and had been with the Mariners, who DFA’d him last week.

I'm good with this pickup but I do hope that they give him a bit of time to smooth things out in the ACL and/or San Jose and/or Sacramento before calling him up.

Right-hander Cole Waites was promoted for the second time this season, this time to Triple-A. Reliever with a huge fastball, struck out 38 in 21 innings in Double-A. There’s a couple young guys in AAA now who seem like potential September options.

Waites has been getting a lot of helium the last month or so. I think he is an option to be a regular contributor in the bully next season. As you said, as well, maybe even this season. I don’t think there is much reason nit to jettison some of the arms currently in the bully if they plan on moving on from them this off-season.

It was weird that they were hanging on to Carroll for so long. He was a bad pitcher on a bad pitching staff. That is saying something.

Drew Jackson was an odd signing, right around the time Gamboa was left go and Steele Walker was added. Jackson played more outfield (7 games) than infield (3 games - 1 each at short, 2nd and 3rd). He shows another tendency the org has been leaning toward this year - signing a player and then discarding him within 2 weeks.

Vaun Brown's .352 batting average is the highest in full season minor league baseball (there are a few guys in rookie leagues and Dominican league higher). His .635 SLG is the 4th highest among qualified hitters in full season ball. He's kind of a DUDE!

Don’t be shocked if he works his way to SF next season.

At his age, with his numbers, he needs to be moving up the ladder faster than he is.
