They were 12-0 going into the CCG in 2017 and people were still saying they didn’t belong in the playoffs after six 10+ win seasons the previous eight seasons and the ones that weren’t were 9 and 8 wins. They were ranked third as the only undefeated P5 team. Barely even a blip on the radar.

On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin, plunge right through that line.
Run the ball clear down the field, a touchdown sure this time.
On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin, fight on for her fame.
Fight, fellows, fight, fight, fight, we'll win this game.

Remember, Bucky says, Fuck 'em!

In my mind Wisconsin is the MOST relevant that hasn't broken through to elite.

That just shows the vast distance between the elite and 'the rest'.

You, sir, are no true Hooplan.

I'm actually OG.

Tater salad was not an option when this place was formed back in the day. Therefore not "true Hooplan".
It was brought in from one of the message board immigrant groups that came along after. Apparently yours.

@MAIZEandBLUE09 seems to think Harbaugh going (10-3), (10-3), (8-5), and (10-3) makes Michigan relevant on the big stage and were a threat to win the National Championship.

I say Pelini won 10 games several years and never less than 9, but Nebraska was widely considered irrelevant on the big stage.

Sorry, no tater salad.

What say you?

Discuss.
I think schedule impacts this on a year to year basis. If you are a major program and are not getting over the 10 win hump, probably not. A tough schedule can make a 10 win seasons relevant. If you still only win 10 games when your schedule is easy, then not really. You aren’t putting yourself in the playoff picture when you have the chance.

You abandoned your sense of humor back in 2010. Some former sports forum trauma which drove you to find the Hoop?

That was a lot of derp.

I came to SportsHoopla because my sense of humor would get me banned elsewhere.

You have to go back to 1974 (44 years) to find the last 10 win AP or Coaches poll National Champion.
USC (10-0-1) won the coaches poll (UPI) and Oklahoma won the AP at (11-0).

You have to go back to 2004 (14 years) to find the last 11 win AP or Coaches poll National Champion.
USC (11-0) AP and Coaches polls.
Prior to that it was 1990 (28 years) with Georgia Tech (11-0-1) Coaches, and Colorado (11-1-1) AP.

A 10 win team has not made the CFP.

Two 11 win teams have gotten into the CFP.

Oklahoma: 2015 (11-1) Big 12 did not play a CCG.
Ohio St: 2016 (11-1) Did not play in the Big 10 CCG. (Penn St

No two loss team has made the playoff.

10 Wins in itself is no longer relevant or elite. A program needs to have a steady string of 10 wins with some 11 or 12's sprinkled in there to just be relevant.

11 wins is now the bar.

Maybe I an misunderstanding the original point trying to be made.

To clarify: I am saying to be a team that is nationally relevant. Not necessarily a playoff team. Also 10 regular season wins is different than 10 total wins. Unless the field is beaten to hell, don’t expect to see a 10 win playoff team for a while.

You wouldn't be alone.

The poll specified "Entire season".

That would include CCG's and Bowls.

i.e. Someone from February - August bragging about their team winning 10 games last year doesn't mean much of anything when every 10 win team played at least 13 games and some even 14 (with CCG's).
Thus those 10 win teams had at least 3 or even 4 losses.

Also take into account back in the day there were only 11 games and no conference titles. Add in we now have a potential of watching 15 games in a season. Similar to cash, 10 wins doesn’t buy you the credibility it use to.

Yeah. I've used that in my examples.

The extra 3 games (1 regular season, 1 CCG, 1 bowl game) have diluted the accomplishment of winning 10 games.

I'm substituting "elite" for "relevant "

I have reasons, just don't feel like typing it up on my phone.

When I think of "elite" programs, I think of it 2 different ways. One year and multiple years.

For one year

I think it depends. It depends what level of "elite" are you talking about. I would say North Dakota State elite, but not among P5 teams. Would a team like Boise State have a shot at being "elite"?

Depending on the setup of the season, there is a chance that a 10-2 regular season team, even if they go 10-4. But now-a-days, I would think 12 wins (including post season wins) would be common win total, and that could be a stretch for some teams.

For Iowa in 2015, they needed to go 12-0 to be "elite", and many argue they were not elite, but they needed 13-0 to be in CFP. I think if Iowa went 10-2 in 2017 and then won B1G, they had a strong enough schedule to be an "elite" team, but Iowa had an 8-win team.

So, if they have a strong schedule, than yes, 10 wins can be elite.

For multiple years

I think teams can be "elite" over a stretch of consecutive seasons without being "elite" in one. How many teams go 3-4+ years of winning 10 games and are not considered elite? Elite doesn't necessarily blue blood.

I would consider Iowa 2002-05 an elite program, when they were arguably elite only in 2002.

Well for your multiple years, as has already been discussed, no one really considers Wisconsin to be elite but they have been a very solid team the last eight years with six years of 10+ wins.

Well, post here if your team has 46 9+ win seasons, which is the most important stat for consistency.
