The Season So Far-Week 1

1st 4: Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma

2nd 4: Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Wisconsin

3rd 4: Notre Dame, Washington, Auburn, Florida

Analysis: Alabama was actually the best-looking team, considering the opposition. Wisconsin was also impressive with a shutout. No change at the top as the strength of the teams and opposition is still in doubt. Auburn makes a big move with a last second win over Oregon. Clemson played well enough to win and retain its number 1 position.

Playoff picks. Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma.

Analysis: The same 4 as the pre-season. No one else did enough to move up. Oklahoma started hot, but in the end gave up 31 points. Georgia won a methodical game. Clemson and Alabama were the most impressive.

Most surprising: Wisconsin, Utah, Cincinnati, and Boise State

Analysis: Wisconsin was the most surprising with a powerful shutout over South Florida. Utah showed it could be heading for the top 10 with a solid win over arch rival BYU. Cincinnati showed it’s worth with a win over UCLA. Boise State with a stunning comeback over Florida State shows they will not be ignored for a New Years Day berth by the end of the season. They now have the potential to run the table.

Most disappointing: Tennessee, UCLA, Florida State, Miami.

Analysis: Tennessee could be in for a long season with a stunning loss to Georgia St. UCLA looked surprisingly like last year’s team and was not ready for Cincinnati. Florida State should still be considered a contender in the ACC, despite a surprising come from behind win by Boise State. Miami lost a very sloppy game with Florida, despite several chances to win.

Heisman Trophy: Jalin Hurts, Jonathan Taylor, Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne

Analysis: Jalin Hurts had the best game of all the contenders. Jonathan Taylor might have surpassed him but was pulled early due to the Wisconsin rout. Trevor Lawrence was just average in Clemson’s win. Another stellar performance by Tua easily allowed Alabama to control the game.

Big 3 Games of the Week: LSU-Texas, Texas AM-Clemson, Cincinnati-Ohio State

Analysis: LSU looked far superior to Texas in week 1. Sam Ehlinger should be the best QB on the field, but the team’s defense appears to be lacking. LSU 34-20. Clemson has a powerful team and AM looked great last week, but cannot match up with Clemson over 60 minutes and the game at Clemson. Closer than expected, but Clemson 35-24. Ohio St hasn’t lost an in-state game for almost 100 years and the streak should continue. State will struggle a bit, but in the end will triumph by a score of 31-21.

Big Games in September: Stanford-UCF, Oregon-Stanford, Michigan-Wisconsin, Notre Dame-Georgia, Ohio St-Nebraska.

Analysis: Notre Dame-Georgia appears to be the biggest game in September. Michigan and Wisconsin have moved up in importance, due to a great showing by the Badgers and just a so-so performance by Wisconsin. At the moment, I would take Wisconsin at home to win. Georgia also appears to have a small, but solid chance over Notre Dame. UCF must beat Stanford if it wants a 3rd straight unbeaten regular season. At this point their chances look very good.
