Yes they do.

Yeah.
Touche', bad example on my part, but I still think most of those old timers were signing for free. Especially compared to today.

This was big already in the 90´s... college friend on my floor had weekend business selling baseball/football cards. He even set up shows on weekends and got players to come in for a fee to sign autographs.... typically the type of ítem decided $$$.

Prices always went up with HOF members.

Are you saying Ruth charged for his autographs? I never heard that before. I didn't think he did

That's what the other guy in this thread said, and he provided a source so I guess he did.

That's a ridiculous price for a Manning auto.

Any price for any guy's signature is just plain silly.

I'll never get it.

I remember back in the 80s...my 1st stint in GA, Claudell Washington lived nearby a rental I was living in, signed a baseball and gave to me...young jocks, we were playing catch with the thing the street a few days later...eventually lost it.

Could be and probably is a charity fund raiser for him....He may be doing it in a different venue but the proceeds go to a charity he supports...I sure don't think he's worried about running out of money in his lifetime...

I think the artcile stated that the kid he gave them to sold them, not Babe. I'm not sure what point he was making while quoting that story, but it's on the internet so it must be true

New Year's Day 1974 I took my sister to see the Boston Bruins play in Vancouver. Got her a stick signed by Phil Esposito. It was broken and in dire need of one of those plastic Super Blades.

Which my brother promptly did as soon as she put it down. It became a road hockey stick and eventually firewood....

I don't get it either. Best I've been able to come up with is, 'name-dropping with proof'.

Not at all, I've been a Peyton fan since Tennessee. If it's all for profit, I don't see where a comfortably rich player needs to soak his fans for his autograph. It definitely sours me on him a bit if it's not for a good cause.

Because those fans are lined up out the door to get soaked.
