That's an easy call for Romine imo.

As far as utility guys go, he's not a bad one.

Yeah...I'd go with Romine...for no other reason than the total number of positions he can play. However....I would consider signing Mike Aviles to Toledo, just in case this Mahtook/Jones/Collins thing falls flat. Tigers could fall back to a Romine/Aviles platoon in CF.
:)

How about the one for utility infielder? Romine, Machado, or Infante. Not sure that isn't less of a "battle" and more of a "pick a name out of a hat" type of thing.

I read that Machado and Moya are both out of minor league options. Either they make the team out of ST, or they go on waivers.

So long.

At least Mr. I won't be around to see the streak end.

Al Avila on local radio, talking about the Tigers CF situation:

"We really like Mikie Mahtook. We think he has a bright future. Of course, we like JaCoby Jones. We like Tyler Collins. We still have Gose and Pressley. We might still make a move if it makes sense for us. But we also feel the guys we have can be productive."

Jones and Mahtook had better not both be on the 25 man.

Al Avila is at it again...

"There's something to be said about continuity. If you have good players that you feel are still productive and they're still together, that continuity can be a big plus for us, how guys know each other better."

Politically correct way to say, "We didn't do shit." If you were handcuffed by finances, luxury tax and big contracts, just say so, asshole. We aren't stupid.

GM Al Avila satisfied with Tigers' offseason

News out of spring training is that Tyler Collins arrived in better shape -- down from 215 lbs. to 205. He then promptly strained a lat muscle and won't be able to throw for 10-14 days.

Michael Fulmer starts the official Grapefruit League opener today vs. Baltimore, and will be followed by Mike Pelfrey. Each is expected to throw about 30-35 pitches.

So I hear Nicky C in the two hole is the plan for the season?

That seems really fucking stupid.

Castellanos - does not hit into a lot of DPs. But the Tigers do not have a #2 hitter unless one of their CF candidates surprises everyone.

Yes, I think his strikeout rate is too high to be batting #2.

Angel Pagan.....still available. CF...switch hitter, can hit in the #2 hole...or hit leadoff and Kinsler moves to #2 spot. He'll cost a little but you could offer two year deal. Would give team someone to possibly fill RF spot after JD leaves.

Hard to hit into a DP when you're walking back to the dugout.

Upton was the #2 hitter last year to start. So this shouldn't be a surprise.

Pagan projects better as a corner outfielder these days, but can probably play CF better than anyone we have. Still hitting well and stealing a few bases. He'll be 36 in July, and my hunch is he's looking for a 3-year contract, minimum. That's why he hasn't been signed yet. I'd go 2 years, for sure.

I see that the Tigers signed a 28 year old Cuban shortstop that projects out to be AAA material or maybe a major league utility player. That Avila...he keeps pushing the envelope towards greatness. :)

Gotta replace Dixon Machado after he inevitably gets cut and goes on waivers.

Looks like Mike Pelfrey is already in midseason form. He gave up 2 ER in 1.2 innings yesterday, and needed 51 pitches to record 5 outs.

Anibal Sanchez got bombed in his recent start, too. Neither guy is making a case to unseat Boyd in the #5 starter spot.
