Detroit Tigers Ongoing 2017 Thread

Tigers sign Mike Fiers (Astros) for $6mil on a one year deal. His 2017 stats were not pretty...over 5.00 ERA and lots of HRs....but given that some sites are listing Buck Farmer as the fifth starter - Fiers is an upgrade.

If he turns it around early in the season...he could bring a decent prospect at the trade deadline.

If he can be flipped for a upgrade to the A ball third starting spot, it's money well spent.

If this is the biggest splash of the offseason, I won't be surprised, or disappointed.

I have a plan...

1. Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell buy the Houston Astros
2. They trade Jose Altuve and George Springer to Detroit for Jordan Zimmerman and 2 AAA bat boys
3. They put as many Astros on waivers as they can, knowing Detroit will have first shot at them.
4. No MLB team can complain or they risk having the Stanton trade investigated by the Gov't.

Tigers get two low level prospects. 18 year old pitcher -Wikel Hernandez. Troy Montgomery, probably a AA level outfielder. Montgomery was ranked #20 on LA's prospect list. (Should put him in top ten for Tigers hehehe)

Four other teams were interested in dealing for Kinsler, but all four were on his veto list.

Tigers pick up OF Victor Reyes from the D-Backs organization in the Rule 5 draft. He hit .292 in AA last year with 18 SB. Also hit .316 in the Arizona Fall League. Not much power. Adds organizational depth, if nothing else. Would be a future leadoff hitter candidate if they can teach him to take more pitches. Only 27 BB in 516 Double-A plate appearances.

Sometimes when you're picking prospects, you get prospects that you can positively coach their talent. The Tigers have been blown up and they are starting to rebuild ... it will be both fun and aggravating.

I want to see them use him as a pinch runner/reliever.

He doesn't strike out much though. Read a few things about him and that he's said. His approach is contact, doesn't care about power. If his body ever develops beyond string bean he might bring something more than singles.

Kindve head scratching move with several homegrown outfielders almost ready. Everybody else went after pitching in the Rule 5. And we need pitching as much as anyone.
