Cleveland signed AJ to a minor league deal. Since leaving Detroit, he's been nothing special. Our current CF situation isn't good, but we can do better than Jackson.

Guy was trash last year until he disappeared with some sort of injury.

Yep ... .254 with 0 home runs and 2 SB in 181 at-bats, then had surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. Damaged goods.

Cleveland is using Jackson as DEPTH in CF. Detroit does not even have depth. Just a thin crust of Tyler Collins, Nanook, and JaCoby Jones. (I guess Gose is still around...no one grabbed him off waivers.)

BTW...the above three Tigers (not Gose) batted a combined .212 in 349 ABs. With one SB between them.

I saw Gose was outrighted. Seems like that guy had potential.

I heard a radio report today that may shed some light on the Tigers offseason activity ... or more accurately, LACK of activity.

The Tigers are determined to NOT be over the MLB "luxury tax" threshold for the 2018 season. For luxury tax purposes, the 2017 roster is currently at $212 million. The 2017 threshold is $195 million, meaning the Tigers will be paying the tax for a second consecutive season if they stand pat. For this year, the tax is 17.5% of any amout over $195 million.

The 2018 threshold is $197 million. If any team is over the threshold for a third straight season, the tax goes up to 50% of the overage. Al Avila has stated the Tigers will NOT be over $197 million payroll next year, no matter what. Thus, no multi-year, big-dollar deals are coming in the current offseason.

GM: Tigers above luxury tax mark for 2nd straight season

Hey, don't forget the great ANDREW ROMINE can play CF, too. He hit .236 last year and was 8-for-8 in SB.

:pound: :D

With free agents and buying out options, Detroit should be able to chop off close to $60mil in salary after this season. No matter what happens this season....Detroit needs to have a major rebuild. Not only let most (if not all) of their free agents go, but seriously try to rid themselves of the contracts of Verlander and VMart. They may be stuck with Zimmermann and Upton (which should finally get Avila canned) and unless Cabrera agrees to radically re-do his contract...he stays. 2017....the last gasp, then start over.

Yep, quite a bit of money likely coming off the books after 2017.

Anibal Sanchez ($16 million option for 2018) -- GONE
Mike Pelfrey (owed $8 million for 2017, then FA) -- GONE
Mark Lowe (owed $5.5 million for 2017, then FA) -- GONE
F-Rod (owed $6 million for 2017, then FA) -- GONE

Ian Kinsler (owed $14 million for 2017, $12 million option for 2018) -- ??? Will be 35 years old
J.D. Martinez (owed $11.75 million for 2017, then FA) -- Will want long term contract; likely gone

Another experienced CF is signed by AL Central rival......

The White Sox have agreed to a minor-league deal with outfielder Peter Bourjos, per Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter). He’ll receive an invitation to MLB camp in the agreement.

Bourjos, 29, figures to have a solid shot earning at least a share in a platoon arrangement in center for the rebuilding South Siders. As things stand, the organization’s depth chart is loaded with unproven options such as Charlie Tilson, Leury Garcia, Jacob May, and Adam Engel.

Average bat (falling to below average the last few years) with some speed, but right-handed. With the acquisition of Mahtook, we need a lefty more.

Thanks, Al Avila, for making "Detroit Tigers Ongoing 2017 Thread" one of the quietest boards on The Hoop.

If you will note: 5 of the players above have some experience at 1b, some even at the major league level. I believe that Avila wants to make sure that Miggy plays as little as possible this spring.

Also could have something to do with the fact the only guy that played more than 25 games at first for Toledo is going to be 32 in April.

(He had a nice season though. And was a similar signing as the guys you listed last year. Came in from a two year stint in Japan.)
