I was watching the Tigers season preview video over at CBS, and the host mentioned that the 2016 Tigers ranked 28th in innings pitched by starters. Yep, only two MLB teams saw their starters log fewer innings than the Tigers.

The Tiger bullpen is bad enough. Add "overworked" to the equation and ... YECCH! I'm amazed they won 86 games.

That's tough to pull off when your Ace was third in all of baseball in innings.

Rumor has it that the Indians will strengthen their already strong bullpen by signing lefty Boone Logan. Logan and Andrew Miller give them two strong lefties in the pen.

Tigers are OK, however. They picked up Daniel Stump in Rule V draft.

A lot of early exits for Pelfrey and Sanchez. And it seemed like every third start by Boyd, he got knocked out in the 2nd inning.

Logan has a career 4.45 ERA, inflated some by three years in Colorado. His 4 years with the Yankees were pretty good. I like his K rates (11+ in each of the last 5 seasons), but he also walks a few too many.

No worries, Kyle Ryan is poised to be the next great lefty-on-lefty specialist. :hope:

Is part of the reason the tigers pitchers so few endings the fact Zimmerman was out most of the year and they were restricting some of the young starters?

Other than his first game, Jones looked terrible.:agree:

Royals signed Jason Hammel to a two year deal. Somewhat replaces the loss of Ventura. It at least gets Chris Young out of their rotation and makes him a spot starter. Looking more and more like a two team race for second in the AL Central.

Tigers signed David Lough to minor league contract to increase the number of CF candidates.

Let's see: Jones, Collins, Mahtook, Gose, Presley, Lough, Juan Perez, and, of course, Andrew Romine.

Combine the best qualities of all eight, and you might get a mediocre major league CF.

At this point, I'd just take the best fielding center fielders and not worry about hitting. With a lineup of Kinsler, Miggy, Victor, JD, Upton and Castellanos, hitting should not be an issue. I assume with Maybin gone, Iglesias bats in the 2-hole. That means the CF bats eighth or ninth. Not a critical spot in the batting order.

Too bad Detroit couldn't land a real defensive whiz to play CF...even if you'd have to accept a .220 BA. Some of the guys they have are not awful with the glove, but not standouts.

Two free agent centerfielders remain. Angel Pagan and Michael Bourn. Both would probably be better in LF at their ages (35-34) and they can still demand a few million bucks. Pagan was looking for a multi-year deal at one point, but that may be over. Both can hit lefty....so if the Tigers can work a one year deal.....spend the $. (It just might mean one more player that can be used to pick up a prospect at the trade deadline)

I'd be fine with Bourn. He's declined since his Gold Glove days (2009-10), but can still probably defend CF better than anyone we currently have.

Even though the results were not always pretty...Illitch's ownership of the Tigers was entertaining. RIP

A tad bewildered at the young Illitch's praise of Avila, and how he (Avila) is respected and admired throughout baseball. Avila may be a heck of a nice guy....but he has sat on his hands and done nothing this winter. It will be interesting to find out if the lack of action has been a directive from the "new" ownership. I have to think that Illitch Sr was not handling baseball matters for perhaps the last year or more.

I got a good chuckle out of an article in the Det Free Press. They were mentioning position battles coming up in the spring. How about the one for utility infielder? Romine, Machado, or Infante. Not sure that isn't less of a "battle" and more of a "pick a name out of a hat" type of thing.

That's an easy call for Romine imo.

As far as utility guys go, he's not a bad one.
