I have read that Avila hired and is using analytics on all his offseason moves... so he has some math nerd telling him to make these deals based on some weird algorithm.

Well, at least Avila is being honest on the Tigers pitching staff and why he's aggressively addressing it.
Tigers' Offseason Mission: Fix 'Horrible' Pitching
You aren't getting it... Negotiating with one team is one of the last things any agent is going to do. Its going to be a bidding war for him next year... What ever the Tigers would offer now would be blown away on the open market... The only people that benefit would be the Tigers.. Chapman has no reason to discuss an extension.. and won't. Trust me.
There is no reason why the Tigers can't land a guy like Miller or Betances during the season.. patience.. if the Yankees struggle next year.. which could happen if they don't land some starters soon... They most certainly could trade miller.Pitchers Daniel Norris (22 years old), Matt Boyd (24) and Michael Fulmer (22) are the three that Avila said were getting the most attention on the market. Yet even with trade offers coming, all three remain on the Tigers’ roster.
“One of the priorities that we had coming into this winter was keep those guys and not to trade them away,” Avila said. “It was very tempting. We were in conversations with the top closers out there, including a guy with the Yankees but the temptation of trading some of those, a group of those young guys, we resisted it and we feel we went the way where it could work out for us hopefully this season and then beyond.”
Betances or Miller
They most certainly could trade miller.
Miller does a lot for me... He is a lefty... can get both lefties and righties out.. and is young still.Miller does nothing for me. Now, Betances is a different story.

Blue... There is still hope!!
Actually.. he toiled until he was moved to the bullpen permanently. Since 2012 ( when he made the permanent move) he has been outstanding.finally hit his stride in last two years. was mostly toiling with partial set-up duties or 7th inning for a couple years then boom, strikes gold in 2014/2015... late bloomer who finally found his niche..
Blue... There is still hope!!
Really.. there are probably only 5 teams that will be able to afford what he wants.. He is going to get 5-6 years at least... He could be the first 100 mil closer...oh boy, there is hope, right ?
ya know I don't have any of the knowledge that you, iffy, Smitty, Howie, Dutchis, Burf, Gandy does and have never minded coming across as dumb-founded.
However, I get your point that Chapman wants to blow it up as most money ever for a RP. You don't want to limit your potential Lottery-like coup. I can tell you that there is at least 10 clubs minimum that wouldn't have the resources to even be in bidding a war for him. probably more like 16-20 teams

kind of where I was going. It was his move to Boston and he'd come in late 6th or early 7th as a 1-2 out specialist and moved onward/upward from there when he proved his mettle and could handle set-up duties
D'backs rumor with Greinke and that young offense with a very good defense would blow up the NL west
Verlander clearly was still effected by the surgery he had and was not completely healthy. I am not worried about Verlander at all. Not having the extra innings this season from the playoffs and missing the first few months was the best thing that could have happened to him. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Verlander had a CY caliber season next year. He clearly was a different pitcher late in the year... And nothing suggests he won't be even healthier with more rest.yep. I figured or assumed 18M+ per for him.. I'd pay it now..
reason why I would do it now. The window may be closing soon for this roster. Miggy injuries last two years and won't know if that's the beginning of decline or not.
V-Mart....... you hope he bounces back but two knee surgeries at this stage may be end also.
JV............. which do you get. the 2013/2014 version or the mid-august to end of season 2015
Sanchez..... I've been telling two on here for the last year or so you may be seeing his decline also mostly due to constant shoulder issues since June 2013
Kinsler....... he had some early season (may-late june 2015) issues... when is his decline coming. it could be this year. hope not
Bottom line you may only get this year until 2018 season to win it all unless guys like Gose, Collins, Moya, and any of current farm pitchers make rapid accent
