I am not defending the signing at all... I just want to make that clear. He does have some redeeming qualities though.

All you guys are much more knowledgeable than I am when it comes to what repertoire pitchers have en sech, however, I'm still surprised he at the very least didn't go after Iwakuma who's BAA and WHIP is much lower and keeps the ball down. Probably gave up more HR's but how many of those were on the road versus SafeCO

From what I see from his stats.. he is basically an older version of Rick Porcello.. lol.

funny as I was thinking the same... I still Like Ricky P... got some sentiment there and he's still young

Who knows what goes on behind closed doors. Maybe Iwakuma didn't want to come to Det... Maybe he wanted a 4 year contract. Regardless... You can't tell me the Tigers really needed to make this signing now. I doubt there was a line out the door of Boras's office for Mike Pelfrey.

Boras - (answers phone)" hello Al Avila... are you looking to put a offer out for Chen, Holland, or maybe one of my outfielders in austin jackson or denard span? "

Avila- " no i want to sign mike pelfrey, what does he cost"

Boras - "wait a second... you are calling about mike pelfrey?" (laughing)

could be or that he's more comfortable in an environment like Sea, SF, LA, NY where there's a much higher Asian populous. idk

it still sucks any which way you slice or dice it.
Hopefully it works for this year

Detroit doesn't seem to like to sign asian players. Its rare when they do. There is a Japanese pitcher that is a free agent now that they could go after, but I doubt they will...

I don't know what it is... but the tigers just never go after asian free agents.... regardless of it they have MLB experience or not. They are first in line for Venezuelans. They even seem to try to stay away from the Cuban free agents too... Even though Avila is Cuban, was born in Havana.

$16 million for 2 years of Pelfrey???? A guy who has not had a decent season since 2010!!! Do you think the other GMs will be laughing at Avila behind his back next week at the Winter Meetings? Or maybe thinking, "Now THERE is the guy that might just take my overpaid, 39 year old, backup catcher off my hands!"

34.333M per year for Greinke coming via Diamondbacks... that's a lot of smackers and just crazy

Greinke reportedly reaches $206M deal with Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a six-year, $206 million deal with free-agent right-hander Zack Greinke, according to sources, FOX Sports MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reports.

Diamondbacks payroll estimate for opening day was around 64 mil... so they had a LOT of room to add payroll. Phoenix isn't a small market. I wouldn't be surprised to see them add the Japanese pitcher Maeda too. Just and FYI... Greinke defered a chunk of this like the Scherzer deal... over 11 years... its not all being paid in 6 years.

Can anyone explain to me why stupid ass Keith Law from ESPN claims the Tigers $110mil deal with Zimmerman is an expensive risky move... yet he is praising the $206mil deal the Diamondbacks just made with Greinke and says they will get good value out of it? I mean seriously... I understand Greinke is a better pitcher... but he is 3 years older and will be 38 when the deal is completed. Seriously.... Keith Law's wife must have cheated on him with one of the Ilitch's or something... He hates the Tigers. In his eyes every move they make is bad.

Samardzija is gross. The guy is a #4 starter at best. He is Jeremy Guthrie in his prime. Leake isn't a proven starter in the AL... and he is a fringe middle of the order starter in the NL. I like the kid.. but honestly... he isn't that great either...

Leake's number's vs AL teams last year were gross by the way.. totally gross.

His era was 6.49 vs AL

VS Clev - 5.4 era
VS min - 15.75 era
VS oak - 6 era
VS tex - 2.84 era

He gives up a ton a HR too.. but I think most of that has to do with him pitching in a t ball sized stadium in Cinci.

His career ERA vs AL teams is 4.13... in 22 games...
