I am cool with this hold out during preseason. he is on his last year of his contract. Work on a deal I would say to both sides.
However if he holds out during the season. Screw him. make him play at least the min. games & if so fran tag him (if they want to) the next year while planning for your next RB.
Guys that sit out preseason often get hurt. Dalvin Cook often gets hurt. Not a good combo.

yeah the funny thing is.
He already sat out a season with injury on the contract he has. Now he wants to hold out another year for more money. Instead of honoring the contract. (that paid him to sit on the sidelines)

Why not? One hit and it could be all over for him. I'd do the same thing. 24 years old with his talent? Somebody will trade for him and give him more than the 1.3 or whatever it is he's due next season.

The writing has been on the wall for several years now for top RBs on rookie deals...secure that next deal before your rookie deal is up.

MIN...this will be a good indicator to note if they will be a legit playoff contender...they let Diggs go for younger talent...if they don't have Cook, they won't be in the mix unless they can replace his production.

Agreed...he's young enough to invest a 3-4 yr deal. Never has played a 16 game season, teams might not look beyond a 3 yr deal.

Pass... Great player, but not worth the long term investment. Don't blame him for wanting to cash in now. Strike while the iron's hot, and for RBs its only hot for a few seconds.

1600 yds is great production for that one season...would love to have him, but...not for the kind of coin he's looking for.

He'll probably get 3 yrs to spread the signing bonus out, but anything more than 2 yrs is a big risk.

Agree, and yet disagree. Trading away Diggs was interesting - and could signal a bit of a shift.

However, RB just isn't what it used to be. Unless you have a truly transcendent player, you are going to get very similar results with other players in that position.

For one, Mike Boone is a pretty good back, IMO. I watched him for 4 years in Cincinnati and the kid has NFL talent. He's not going to be the play-maker that Cook is with his level of speed, but Boone can break runs, and is really tough to bring down on the 1st hit. I'd be willing to bet that he could put up close enough to what Cook would.

Having watched Connor make the ProBowl a year after Bell bolts...I agree 100%.

The issue with MIN...Justin Jefferson might be better than Diggs, but probably not year one...the learning curve at WR to the NFL is not the same as a RB. So...it seems like MIN would want to keep one of the two (Diggs/Cook) and they've already parted ways with Diggs.

Running backs are going to need incentive filled contracts to make their money.

Okay, I'll give you that, but will he be better than Diggs this season?

Julio was a beast a rookie, but had some things to learn before he was ready to be a legit WR1.

This seems like it will be the new norm for RBs.
Problem is, the CBA actually makes this more prohibitive. If he sits out, then the Vikings can tender him with a 1st rounder, but not actually use the franchise tag. Not only does that not give him a long-term option, it pays significantly less, meaning long-term, he's less likely to recoup those earnings. I made the same argument with Bell's situation - long term, he cost himself way more money by holding out rather than just taking a little less per year. Losing almost an entire year's salary plus bonuses was never going to be recouped by his new contract. Players look too short-term with these things, and don't focus enough on the actual long-term resolution.

Cooks bigger issue, IMO, is that he knows he's got issues staying healthy and he's trying to capitalize on his healthy season. Problem is - as we've all pretty much stated on here - RB is just not the same position it was even 5 years ago, let alone 10 years ago when guys like AP were some of the leagues top paid.

Minny has a good run blocking OL, and while they did trade Diggs, with their defensive make-up and blocking along the OL, there's no reason to think they won't be able to plug in another RB and get at least similar success.

Agreed, the CBA has made it more penal, but once a player has it on the brain that he's underpaid, especially one with a career span of a RB...they resort to the only thing they have...I don't expect that to change.

If teams simply ignore the player and carry on...yes, I think we'll see this activity slow down, but it's not that easy to let a key player that everyone (teammates) knows is underpaid rot on the vine.

Bottom line...when a guy at the same position sees a guy (like McCaffery) get paid early, this was something we should expect.

I think the pay structure for RBs needs to be redone. Most of these guys give the best years of their careers for peanuts while other positions cash in big. For an integral part of most offenses that’s not fair in my opinion.
