Is this really how far we have bent the players way that we now are calling it "macho" to play out your existing contract? Maybe we should just let the players pick their own salary and which games they want to play...Without a new deal he'd be taking a risk playing more than the minimum number of games. Better to play 6 games and get to free agency or a franchise tag than be macho, get injured, and end up with next to nothing.
It reflects the growing disparity between star player money and rookie pay for a 4th year player with a very short career life expectancy. What's the upside? Be like Dak Prescott? Play out your 4th year and still get tagged? The down side is he gets hurt like Teddy Bridgewater and starts again from nothing. As QBs those 2 could play for another 10+ years. Cook probably only has 4 good years left in him at RB.Is this really how far we have bent the players way that we now are calling it "macho" to play out your existing contract? And Lloyds of London
All jobs have risk. Stay home and you don't get any money. How is that better? And owners don't want to be stuck with a $50M cap hit for a guy that can't play or stinks. So every guy that outperforms his contract sits home and there are no games or half the team is cut to afford the half that want more money. It reflects the growing disparity between star player money and rookie pay for a 4th year player with a very short career life expectancy. Nothing new here. It was a 4 year contract with 2 years guaranteed and no renegotiation allowed until after the 3rd year. If Cook had sucked for 2 years he would have been gone. Instead he's a star and he wants to renegotiate after year 3. The Vikings can renegotiate, cut him, trade him, or play hard ball. The CBA that allows the Vikings to play hard ball allows Cook to play X amount of games and call it a year. Complaints about the CBA should be sent to NFL headquarters. Lots of teams are going to be in awkward positions with players on the last year of their contracts, (49ers - Kittle, Rams - Kupp). It's up to GMs to sort it out.All jobs have risk. If we all use the outliers to make our decisions none of us will ever leave the house and the NFL salary cap will need to double.
