Exactly, an extended lockout would kill any momentum and that needs to not happen.

Word. If a CBA is agreed to in time, then it should be fine.

Evo made a great point about the success that the league has had this year. Another element that would be helpful is if the Coyotes move, which would jump-start another franchises market.

Yeah, but a plateau will eventually happen regardless, I would think.

You're right. I think we're just disagreeing on when that will happen. Keep in mind that a plateau won't completely halt the increase, but it will just put it back to a lower constant.

Like any other industry, you won't see salary decreases very much because the cost of living continues to rise. I don't mean to take this argument that direction, but there are a lot of other factors that come into play that we haven't (and probably should) discussed.

Let's say that the plateau stays in the 5% range over the next 5 years, then maintains a 3% increase for the next five years. Crosby's $9 mil salary looks like a much smaller number at the end of that and there's a very good chance that he's still one of the best in the world. It also leaves enough to give Malkin a long-tern contract locking up 40% of this teams core for about what the average top-6 forwards would be making then.

The problem I have with really extended deals is that it limits flexibility. What if the financial environment changes for the worse? What if, for whatever reason, the team stops performing a rebuild is necessary? What if new CBAs cause issues with this contract?

Shorter deals allow you to adjust more. I know long deals are typically given to franchise players, but what happens when the franchise changes? In ten years, this contract could be crippling.

It's not about the money, I fully understand that the money side often benefits the team, it's about roster flexibility. Like I said, I'm a proponent of significant roster turnover from year to year. I said seven players should change. That's one third of the team. It's the only problem I have with Shero's style as a GM. He keeps things too similar from year to year. I wish he'd shake it up more. In order to have that turnover, short contracts are necessary.

I guess one of them isn't crippling, but if Sid gets one, Geno will want one, too, and now you've got two long contracts. And then maybe Letang will want one. That's three. It'll start to pile up.

That's very debatable, but I see your point. I think that we do need to recognize that those players aren't all on the same level at all times. Letang will be tough to keep when he is old enough for UFA, as will Malkin. That's something that will be prioritized based on their play leading up to that point. To focus on Crosby, he's the guy that all expect to be a lifelong Penguin. We don't know what the future holds for the other two.

i think when it comes down to it, keeping malkin and letang is going to cost you from a different pool than a potential 2 or 3 million from crosby's contract

We'll just have to wait until july 1st in regards to sid.

One way to keep both letang and malkin is to trade staal and martin, which i expect will happen this off season, as a package. If staal is not resigned this summer, he won' t make it to camp as a penguin, in order for a team to take staal, theyy will have to take martin off the pens hands.

Again, in terms of i sid, this onfo was passed on to me, his agent wants that type of deal, 14 yrs, 125 mil. See if any truth iuto it. This same source told me about sids neck, not head, long before public, so i give him some credit there.

After running a quick Google search, I've seen a lot more rumors about a 7-year deal being thrown out.
