I read what Wilbon said and I didn't say the money should be federal. It should come out of the 11.3 billion the NCAA is set to make off the BCS and March Madness. As he said. Take 1.3 billion off the top and use it for this.

If you didn't know, the NCAA is the schools, "themselves". Yes, the NCAA makes money. It has to. It is deemed to regulate all athletics of its member schools.

There are several Factions at work here that could spell an NCAA revamp to more modern time rules, or their dissolution in favor of a more favorable organization and set of rules.

With the news media, namely Yahoo Sports and Sports illustrated, recently leaking stories and mostly refusing to give its evidence to the NCAA or any investigator not associated with a school itself, this shows the medias reasoning.

Now we have this new organization that will be pushing for reform, its apparent that the NCAA is going to have to address these issues.

Am i an advocate for paying the college players, no. Am i an advocate for change to the NCAA to give these kids a bit more in terms of pocket money or living expenses, yes. Something ahs to be done, but no matter what is done, there will always be unscrupulous boosters and agents out there trying to offer money or extra benefits to players.

And this is exactly why the rules are in place as they are. I have one very fair suggestion, that might be acceptable. While some these kids might have a real need for some spending money, currently, they are not allowed to hold a job to earn that money. The reason being is that it would be too easy for employers to act as "unscrupulous boosters". However, I think it would be a good idea to set aside some part-time campus jobs for these student-athletes, where their hours and wages are controlled by the school itself, thus making the school responsible to the NCAA for any infractions.

That's exactly what the NCAA can do. Say "Ok well when you signed your schollie these were the terms you agreed to. We will take away your schollie and you can work wherever you want. However, of course, you will now have to pay tuition, food, room and board, etc. Enjoy."

That's an interesting answer. Allow students to make money but they must forfeit the scholarship.

My problem is a decision to not play an athlete could result in a coach or school being held liable for lost wages.

And this is not a bad idea that could work but the NCAA wont let this happen unless they are forced to make changes.

I was in the Navy. Free Meals. A place to sleep. Didn't make a whole lot of money but it was plenty for a 18-22 year old with no real bills or responsibilities. Worked my ass off too. But I don't care if the ship was set up like Caesar's Palace I hauled ass out of there every chance I got. Ate out, went to clubs, etc. AND they paid for most of my education.

Point is. These guys have very demanding schedules with athletics and classes. They wouldn't have time for a part time job even if they were allowed to. What's wrong with giving these guys a little money at least the equivalent of a minimum wage job. Not a million dollars. Just some pocket change so they don't end up with cabin fever.

And can all programs actually afford to pay their athletes? There are a lot more sports than football and basketball. How many student athletes is that per school? Not just counting football, how many student athletes will each program have to pay? I'm sure that Texas and Alabama could spend the money and not blink twice but what about some of these FCS schools or JUCO schools?

And if these schools start paying their athletes, would they just pass the cost over to the fans? It has already gotten to the point to where taking your family to the game requires some major financial planning for the average person.

Now, we have a college players union. The game will soon go to shit.

Head coach: "You said you want what? Okay, you're cut from the team. Make sure your locker is cleaned out by noon, and since your scholarship is being revoked, good luck out there on the job market."

Should college athletes be paid?

I say ... yes ... some sort of stipend. But I fear what floodgates might open for Universities if this ever comes to pass ...

I think they should be paid, but as Craig says, once you start doing it, where does it end?

Don't ever open this can of worms because there's no going back. The changes won't be for the better.

They already ARE paid....in tuition.

Consider how much a full ride scholarship is worth today.

What is college now? 20K a year? Plus books, lab fees, a place to live, etc?

A degree can run you over a hundred thousand dollars.

The colleges are giving that to them, or at least tuition.

Hell of a bargain if you ask me.

It's just that instead of getting cash, they're getting an education for free - and if you play your cards right, that's MUCH more valuable.

Steve Young got his degree in law....for free. As it turned out he didn't need it but if he tore his knee on the first day of his NFL career, he could still practice law.

Now if student athletes want to major in under water basket weaving or some other degree that wont pay squadouche in the real world, that's their option.

If student athletes want to get paid real money, fine - then make them pay for their tuition like everyone else.

Mid ... I used to think the exact same thing, but nowadays ... with all of the big $$$ colleges get thru their athletics progs ....

What I fear the most is what it would do to college athletics. If they ever do it ... they need to standardize and put a cap on the whole thing. But I think it's coming ... sooner or later.

Did not know a full ride scholarship to a university 99.9999% of them would not have been admitted to in the first place does not count as being paid.

No. But they should have full and comprehensive injury coverage across the board while they are in school.

It's absurd that someone can make millions of dollars for their school, suffer an injury in the proccess, then get left holding the bag.

with scholarships, they get paid over 8000 a year... but then again education is not that important...
