Who is he kidding. There's no way anyone is staying an extra year if the NFL comes calling.
He's full of shit.

I see Clowney as a complete and utter bust.

It is more than obvious his whole collegiate "stay" was about money. And his NFL pursuit will be about money.

His pursuit will never be about being the best at his craft.

He is Mario Williams and Julius Peppers, but not even close to those regarding his will to compete and play.

He would be undraftable to me.

I want a guy that wants to play football. A guy that wants to compete. A guy that if he was paid $1K a game would be out there on the practice field.

The only thing Jadeveon has shown is that he is looking for an ultimate payday when he is drafted in the NFL.

I believe those jerseys belong to the team, as does the privilege of wearing them. Remember, that number had been worn by many before you, and will be worn after you're gone. If you didn't like the free tuition, room and board, books, etc, the coaching, diet and weight training, and the opportunity to advance yourself on to the professional sports landscape, maybe you should have just waited until you were old enough and tried to do it all by yourself.

These guys have no idea what the scholarships they receive amount to monetarily.

That's just education. Never mind the training, and opportunity to showcase their stuff to get an opportunity to play in the nfl

I've got married friends with upwards of $200k student loan debt from undergrad and graduate degrees necessary for them to get a job in their field of choice that I'd love to introduce him to. Beyond the impossibility of compensation and Title IX mixing well, it's just a disingenuous argument from people that are too spoiled and feel too self-entitled to have a clear view of the real world.

Probably not the right word. Unlikeliness would have been better.

As someone who graduated with 6 figures of student loan debt, I can confirm. I would've loved to played college football to pay for my education. Shit, I would've played for nothing.

I read this wrong initially.

Ignoring that they are still in theory amateurs and not professionals, there are plenty of jobs where the rate of pay is fixed. You take it or leave it. And if the football players did want to negotiate for better terms, would they be negotiating as well for the women's volley ball team?

What does this even mean? The reason why there is a amateur/pro dichotomy is so that fat old timers and wannabees can get together and have some fun competition without ringers being drafted into their league to ruin the good time.

There's no platonic form of amateur or pro that different leagues adhere or aspire to.

CFB isn't a fun, weekend league. This is a serious league with serious consequences played seriously with serious [billions] money on the line.

There is nothing amateur about it.

Learn to think.

College athletics is the epitome of a socialist system and it has to be. The athletes are compensated with room, board, medical, optical and dental. They are also given a stipend. You can't pay one football player more than others. How good is that one player without his teammates and who decides that?
If you pay the football players, you have to pay the basketball players, baseball players, bowling team, rifle team, yada yada.

So Steve spurrier's new contract brings in 4 million per season. The AD about 675,000. Dare I ask how much the university stands to make from sec network deal?

I don't know enough about university finances to say but with donors and everything else these schools are making big profits . How many Americans have a degree but don't have a career to show for it. Hell my ex gf was the supervisor at a financial institution not having a degree herself but several of her subordinates had bachelor's

As a very rough estimate, each school will probably get about $30 million from all conference sources. The revenue generating sports pay for the multitude of non-revenue generating sports (mens and womens). There are generally only 3 revenue generators at best. Those are football, basketball, and baseball. Not all schools generate a profit from those three sports. Over 95% of college sports operate at a loss. Title 9 says you have to spend just as much on womens sports as mens sports, hence the schools cutting mens sports and adding womens sports.
Arizona even added a womens rowing team in the middle of a desert.

Once all that football money is distributed, there's not near the profit many think there is.

Nebraska eliminated a world class mens gymnastics program and added a few womens sports to meet Title 9 requirements.
