I don't think that they had to change it they just decided to do it on their own as a private organization. I will say now that they are doing it I could see other teams from high school to college to pro across the country doing it too. If a pro team with a century of using the name can change it then other teams may see that as a good justification.I have no problem with the name change. Just one question though. Why does Cleveland have to change their name but the K.C. Chiefs, Chicago Blackhawks and Atlanta Braves don't? The only team that gets a pass is Florida State. From what I remember they have the okay from the Seminole Tribe in Florida.

Who doesn't like naps?Good point. I don't think it was a forced change now that you mention it. They were called the Spiders from 1887 to 1899. Looking up their year by year team history had no idea they were called the Naps from 1903 to 1914. Please don't use that name. I wouldn't be able to root for them anymore.
That image might be just as offensive as Chief WahooI agree, And Drew Carey as the mascot.
Why are you referring to them as indigenous people? I think that’s oppressive as well, they didn’t label themselves that term either. The label indigenous has inferior connotations to primal beings. The word "Indian" is not a name that indigenous people gave to themselves but was a term labeled to them and reinforced by what would be oppressive and/or racist governments. It just reinforces and continues a label from a bad part of our history. Partner in the chants and the caricatures and it becomes pretty bad. I will say that if a local tribe unique to that area were to work with Cleveland (or any team really) to create a nickname, logo, and general atmosphere that is respectful and beneficial to that tribe's reputation and heritage then I think that would be pretty cool.

Contracted in 1899.
Try again
They said it’s not going to be the Tribe. It's gotta be the Tribe.
Or Steamers
No, they weren't. That team was contracted by the National League in 1899.
