The Alex Smith's decision is absolutely not his own to make, there is a second equal vote to consider and if peace at home or half in court means anything to him he won't ignore it.

I'm not near the Scherff fan as some are, but that seems like some odd math. Your OG n OT who both played on the left side of the OL. Graded out in the upper third of their respected positions. So that means you let your right side guard who graded out in the upper 10% of his respected position simply walk away? What do you propose they do with the hole left by Scherff's exit?

Charles and save a boat load of money

We have no idea where Sowell really shakes out, especially considering the combine isn’t done. That being said, Sowell is probably out of reach as I don’t expect any surprises with him; however, you completely miss the point. You don’t pass on better players at key positions for lower graded players at more “luxury“ positions.

Why would Lucas or Schweitzer have any impact on bringing back the AP G?

You can argue about the importance of bringing back Darby, the guy who has spent a single year in Washington after a history of injuries. I know the counter would be Scherff has been injured too, but I would have to ask how good would Darby be without our front four?

So we should weaken the interior line by allowing an AP to leave, so we may sign a guy or two that MAY improve other areas of the team?

If we look at last season, why would you expect them to allow Scherff to leave? We did make big offers to Cooper and Hooper...how did they do with their new contracts?

As for QB, keeping Scherff doesn’t prevent us from going after Stafford...maybe we should hope it does though.

You can plug in Charles at RG. Im saying its very possible Scherff could walk.

Plus if Schweitzer failed then Scherff would be #1 priority. If Lucas failed OT would be #1 priority. Its something to think about. Scherff is going to want to be the highest paid Og in the league.

i think his wife will support any choice he makes concerning his career . i dont see that as being an issue . he could and should consider their feelings .

my personal experience is that at the end of WW2 the marines offered my dad (he was in the army ) a chance to fly in the corp . my dad had an airplane licence before he had a car license because he loved flying so much and my mom (who is close to dying from covid ) stopped him . My dad was a great pilot and was in high demand but my mom was concerned over his safety

that choice haunted my mother to this day because even though my dad could fly the wings off of experienced combat pilots doing aerobatics he still lost esteem and credibility as a pilot because he never got to prove it in combat or in the service . my mom witnessed this first hand . my dad made his choice based on what she wanted and he took the humble pie that came his way when opportunities that could have been his never came . that is why i admire my dad .

now how does this apply to alex , sure he could go with his wife's wishes (and he wouldnt be wrong ) or he could decide he wants a shot at taking a team to a superbowl and winning which is important .

imagine being alex sitting around a table analyzing a game and losing credibility to a trent dilfer or joe flacco because they have super bowls . i wonder if boomer esiason takes shit from phi sims because sims won a superbowl ?

the point is it should be his choice because its blood , sweat , and tears on the line and ultimately he knows what he can and cannot do . i will tell you this if he cant get control of the foot on his injured leg (which he doesnt have ) then i think even he knows he cant play effectively

i stayed in the army for 20 years . i would have stayed much longer but it was the issue of me being able to go into combat healthy that made me know my time had passed . i have been in combat in 7 theaters of war which is one short of the man who did it most in history (at the time of my retirement ) i am 1000 % sure my wife wished i left waaaay earlier but she knew who i was and what i was about . she supported my choice on active duty and when i came to her and admitted my time was done . that ladies and gentlemen was in my top 5 hardest things i had to do .

if alex is done with the competing , the soreness, the way of life he needs to lead then he will leave and it will be on his terms andhe can live with it just like i did . i am glad my wife didnt force me to give up what i loved

well mrs smith knows what her husband is and i think it will be his choice and not something coerced from his wife

Interesting that you appear to express that husbands and wives sitting down to make wise, albeit difficult decisions about their futures, comes down to his call vs one made via coercion. Let's think about that for a moment. Using that standard, all decisions are made by coercion and nobody is happy, correct? If I'm wrong about your position, my humblest apologies! (I know that this is a sensitive topic)

I wanted to do the Alex Smith and his regrets/ego part separately.

We all live with regret and blows to our egos, Smith is no different. In fact, I believe that he regrets not being on a SB winning team already, and probably knows that it's likely not in the cards for him considering which team he's currently signed with. I do agree that it is HIS blood sweat and tears that's put forth in order to play the game, but what about their sacrifices that also allows him to play the game? Have they no value or less value because it's his career? Now it is truly possible that you are spot on and she'll support "any choice he makes," but that doesn't mean that (based on the criteria) she won't feel as if she was coerced or full of regrets if he's injured again.

Can you? What has Charles done to suggest he can play RG, or any position for more than a snap or two per season?

They are not going to give up oh him. Is the jury still out? sure. We will see, it wouldnnt surprise me if we dont sign nback Scherff.

that is a part of life . getting injured again is certainly a possibility. and yes her voice needs to be heard and it has value

Who said they are going to give up on Charles?

I asked what made you think they would count on him, especially to replace an AP.

It also wouldn’t surprise me if we didn’t get Scherff. It is what our franchise does. It gets rid of its homegrown players and takes the trash from other teams and overpays. Maybe we can be smarter because we don’t exactly have a lot of APs to check historically.

typical dean , he conflates asking if a guy who has played 2 snaps as whether he is proven to jumping to giving up on him .

losing an AP guard isnt a good thing . he is a corp player and has been a good citizen , we should reward these guys we develop and not let other teams reap the benefits of our work

You cannot really build a line up front with this approach or thinking dean, seriously. Scherff has earned a new deal just as Moses got his new deal. The team will be just fine giving Scherff the contract he deserves while maintaining continuity up front. Heck, the right side will have been signed. Lucas really stepped up at LT and Schweitzer's play while surprising to say the least, all but indicated the Wes Martin pick was a waste. Both lines up front are instrumental in the success of any football team and even more so to this team because "other" areas of the offense are just not there yet with the current talent but our oline and dline are. Dismantle them or the continuity and you will see a team take a step in the wrong direction. Perhaps Charles (who showed nothing btw) can provide competition at the LG/LT spot. May the best man win.

i think most reasonable fans think you are right . i will say that i dont consider wes martin a wasted pick . he is a 4th rounder and usually they are BU's . he has played 2 yrs so next season is big for him . . charles hasnt done anything but again he is a 4th rounder and he does have this yr as a huge injury year he hasnt shown anything at all but that doesnt mean he cant . a real off season can help him .

but under these conditions you simply dont let an all pro going into his prime go because he wasnt the guy you wanted drafted when he came out and my guts tell me that is the bias he has against sherff

Moses didnt want to be the highest paid OT in the game. Scherff wants to be the highest paid. Sure I would like him back but I can see if the team would let him walk and bring in 2 or 3 more guys in FA.

No bias but he could walk. Kyle Smith did not make the Scherff pick so there is no allegiance there. Plus Smith already stated that he doesn't over pay for OG's. I think Darby would be the bigger loss now than Sherff.

Moses also wasn’t the best RT in the league.
