You don’t accept less than a second obviously because we will get a third compensatory for him. From there, I would hesitate on taking anything less than a first because it is a contract year. If he comes out and gets 15 sacks, we can get at least a first next season.

Getting 9 sacks over 3 seasons from the #2 pick in the draft is even worse business.

I’d trade a third and some change for him. I don’t know if the bears GM is going to offer too much either. He seems to like building from the draft and that means amassing more picks, not trading them all for a very good albeit oft injured DE. You guys should just keep him for his contract year production and possibly trade him before the contract signing (if that’s possible).

Was on mine however, I saw him play in person at Autzen regularly during his time there. Some buzz around that time after all, he went 6th in 2020 draft. At 6'6, 225 lbs he was your prototypical strong armed QB teams look for with athletic ability.
All though I think CY's rookie season was meh (a case for A. Winfield to be ROY was mentioned), his 2nd year left some doubt and then the injury. I believe this year he proves his worth along with Sweat and this defense goes crazy. Unfortunately, decisions will have to be made because you simply cannot pay everyone.

If both Clowney and sweat produce we can pay them both and Curl if we choose to do so . Now with new ownership the choice not to is in play

Unless some team blows us away with a offer we can't refuse you keep him and if he has a hell of a season you re-sign him or tag and trade him

Let's say all 3, CY, Sweat n Curl get down. Like legit 1st team all pro consideration get down.

How do you propose to pay both Young n Sweat 22+ million per n Curl 10 - 14 mill?

And please don't simply say the cap will increase.

Well it will as well as dead cap coming off the books . I doubt anyone is paying a 4.5 sack per yr DE 22mil a yr . Nor a guy who avgs 8 sacks per yr .
Allen came in lower and then projected as did Payne when this whole debate started .

You can do lots of things with contracts and you can also restructure deals and convert salary to bonuses

you also have cuts , fuller LT come to mind

now the question isn’t can we do it , of course we can , the fact is we can do it but you might not be able to get some toys in FA .

now we have added curl into this mix and I will point to look at what we have drafted lately , DBS

If Chase and Sweat only come up with 12.5 sacks between them this year. I seriously doubt either one gets a big money offer from the Skin. We're talking about guys who as you said in post #14, produce. Receiving legit 1st team all pro consideration as I said in my post would be a good indicator that they produced.

As for Payne n Allen coming in lower than projected. At present Allen is the 8th highest paid DT in the league and Payne is the 3rd highest paid DT. I do believe its possible that Allen gave the Skins a slight hometown discount as from all indications he's playing for the team he rooted for as a kid. Not so sure about Payne, but that's beside the point. If both Sweat n CY have big years, particularly with sacks, both their agents will surely classify them as edge defenders/rushers. Below are the highest paid edge rushers for 2023. With productive years (double digit sack numbers, QB pressures, TFLs and solid otr better run defense both CY n Sweat are looking at what? 24.5 mill a year? That's what? 89, 90 mill a year for 4 starters who will all be playing very similar positions. And we've yet to factor in Curl who you as well as myself believe he deserves to get paid. Highest paid safeties are below. I'm think Curl is gonna be looking for 10 mill per at the very very least. So 100 mill or damn near tied up in 5 players. You see that as both feasible and sustainable?

  • 1. Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt: $28 million
  • 2. Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa: $27 million
  • 3. Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett: $25 million
  • 4. Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack: $23.5 million
  • 4. Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby: $23.5 million
  • 6. Dolphins edge rusher Bradley Chubb: $22 million
  • 7. Bills edge rusher Von Miller: $20 million
  • 8. Saints edge rusher Cameron Jordan: $17.5 million
  • 8. Titans edge rusher Harold Landry: $17.5 million
  • 10. Buccaneers edge rusher Shaquil Barrett: $17 million
  • 10. Raiders edge rusher Chandler Jones: $17 million
  • Chargers safety Derwin James: $19 million
  • 2. Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick: $18.2 million
  • 3. Seahawks safety Jamal Adams: $17.5 million
  • 4. Falcons safety Jessie Bates III: $16.01 million
  • 5. Vikings safety Harrison Smith: $16 million
  • 6. Broncos safety Justin Simmons: $15.25 million
  • 7. Cardinals safety Budda Baker: $14.75 million
  • 8. Bears safety Eddie Jackson: $14.6 million
  • 9. Titans safety Kevin Byard: $14.1 million
  • 10. Ravens safety Marcus Williams: $14 million

To this point CY is a bust, not that he can't change that. You can't blame him for injury. 9 sacks in three years sucks, especially for what he has been paid.

Sweat after four years is well behind what Kerrigan did.

How much do you want to pay for one of the two guys who's max sacks was 9? I like Sweat but not for big time money ... at this point. Chase needs to go crazy to get paid. Trade value in the NFL is not good, It is not like you are going to get a lot for a second overall pick with 9 sacks in three years.

Kam Curl has had zero picks in the last two years. I really like Kam but could you get more value from Butler or Martin? It is a question that has to be asked. A point for Kam .... JDR's defense requires someone that understands the D. Can the team do that without him?

Allen signed earlier. Payne came in at my projection.
