Ability to relate to players is huge for an NBA coach. It might actually be the single most important thing.

Rick Carlisle is a very good coach, but he has also struggled to get along with some of the higher profile black stars he has coached in the past (at least Rondo).

If Celtics brass believe Udoka will relate better to their players, it is 100% the right hire.

That is not “racist” in any way.

they cut off a large portion of the pool by skin color….imagine if they flipped the skin color….

they talked about the importance of being a former Player, which Carlisle is

pretty clear they were trying to use that as a way to actually say something else

it’s also possible that the players are an issue as well and didn’t want to relate to someone who wasn’t black. That wouldn’t surprise me at all about brown or tatum

No, they didn’t do that at all.

They didn’t explicitly reject all white candidates.

What they did was choose Udoka BECAUSE he is more likely to relate to their highly woke roster.

This is all about fit. If a white coach fit better, they would have surely hired him. Any leader or any team/business Etc, fit is every bit as important, if not more than the leaders actual skills.

Lastly, Carlisle is a good coach. But he is no Red Auerbach or Greg Popovich. So stop acting like he is the only acceptable choice for this job.

If this is true Brad needs to jump on it.

tpe means that CLE wouldn’t need to eat any salary

Good. They can afford to buy out Kevin Love so the Lakers can sign him on the cheap and see if he's got a few 3's left in him.

I think they’d try to find more expensive useless pieces who expire this year.

like Tristan Thompson. Lol

Which goes really nicely with my point.

Pop is widely viewed as one of the best NBA coaches of all time.

But as good as he is, he had the right players at the right time. Had he been hired initially by the Wizards we probably wouldn’t be able to pick Pop out of a lineup.

Carlisle doesn’t have the resume to assume he would automatically be the guy. Boston probably isn’t the right place for him right now.

The mosh pit he won with in Dallas makes me think he’s very interesting.

He's done nothing without Nowitski. The Pacers got worse with him there. The Mavs did nothing between Novitski and Doncic. He's a first round exit king. He's a good coach for midling teams, but he's not taking the Celts to the next level. I'd take stevens over Carlisle. The C's made a better hire.

With Al Horford coming back, and a glut of options at the 5 spot aside... it made sense to move TT and his salary along...

Hello Josh Richardson and (probably) goodbye Evan Fournier.

I like the tradeoff. Fournier is the better offensive player... but Fournier also can't defend a folding chair and will likely cost significantly more over more years.

This move keeps the C's flexible in their quest for a 3rd star.

Now it makes more sense why they took the vastly inferior pg in the trade

I am fine with this move.
And it ducks the tax one more year.

I think it’s clear they’re gearing up for next year

You guys are gonna love JRich. Dude plays with a snarl and is all day tough. He wasn’t a fit with the Sixers but I enjoyed watching him night in and night out. If the Cs need to include Smart in a package that brings back the star they’re looking for some of the loss experienced with Smart’s toughness and intangibles can be mitigated with JRich on the roster. Hate you guys, haha, but that’s a solid move that will fly under the radar.

i don't mind JRich. Celtics needed more of that "heat culture" on their roster.

It's why I was a big fan of the LAC assistant Craig when they were looking for a new coach. Guy spend almost 2 decades working for Riley and Spo.

This team needs a giant boot in the ass.

I would like to once again thank the writers for not voting for Tatum

Gave the Celtics a lot more breathing room

Enes is back!

Low cost, 1 year contract... I'm good with it, he's a better back-up true 5 than anybody we currently have on the roster.

did bob die??
I figured RWIII was starting at the 5... with Horford more of a hybrid big back-up that often plays the 4.
