It's a really bad contract, relative to what Kemba is at this point.

Maybe, I would think that, with a little patience, he probably could have moved Kemba's contract to some team looking for a "name" to sell their fans and at least kept the first round pick. I'd be curious to see how many teams he discussed a trade with before agreeing to this one.

It's not a horrible trade, but I think they could have done better. Maybe they can turn around and move Horford. I don't know the rules on that though.

With regards to the contract.... there's no "maybe" about it, it's a terrible contract.

Off the top of my head, it's really hard to think of any team who would sign on to take such a contract at something resembling even trading terms... (without Boston having to throw in a 1st)... "big name" or not.

Bottom line: Kemba is broken, unfortunately. The Celtics did everything they could this past year to shield him from wear and tear... Walker still couldn't stay healthy for the playoffs.

This is only a good deal if it gives them added ability to sign a quality player directly or via the trade exceptions

without 16 they gave little to offer so that trade exception has little value

looking at maybe a monte Morris or delon Wright type.

Horford fits really well with the Celtics.

Good move.
I like Big Al as a side piece, too.

That said: what Al Horford brings to the C's was (at best) a 3rd or 4th consideration in the decision to make this trade.

Here is a good link on the financial side of this recent trade:

The deal gives the Celtics financial flexibility in parting with Walker, who is owed $73 million over the next two years. Horford is owed $53.5 million over the final two years of his contract, but only $41.5 million of that is guaranteed, since only $14.5 million of his $26.5 million salary in 2022-23 salary is guaranteed.

they still have no cap space. And will have to pay bon and/smart next year so they’ll be over the cap for a while

I like his veteran leadership for the Celtics. Quiet, but shows by example.

The year you're referring to is the year that Kemba's contract would have been crippling, had the C's not found a way to jettison it.

And they didn’t get expiring contracts….

With regards to the 1st round pick that Boston lost, Moses Brown represents very comparable value in terms of potential and cost to that pick... it's basically a wash.

I'd argue it was bad for what Kemba was in his prime too. He's never been a championship type player IMO. Ball dominant undersized shooting guard essentially.
