I have been a huge critic of Mayhew and to a lesser extent Lewand but I think they have played this one about as good as could be expected.

Nobody wanted to trade for Suh and give up an equal player or picks when so much of his offseason is cloudy as to what he really wanted to do. So the Lions rightfully said they had no interest in trading him, getting lesser value and eating all that dead money with no return.

They would have paid a fair deal to restructure and find cash for FA. But Suh could not even be bothered to find an agent.....or was using not having an agent as an excuse to not negotiate.

And finally tabling the contract talks tell me Suh's demands are so outrageous the Lions realize they unrealistic and the only thing they can do is walk away from the table.

The Patriots didn't get to be a powerhouse by signing bad contracts. The Steelers let James Harrison walk, and good players going back as far as Rod Woodson. Both teams have championships and are not so called destination cities. Maybe the Lions management is doing the right thing instead of overpaying another guy just because he was their draft pick.

We may be without Suh and Fairley but we can replace them with five guys earning five million in their first year. It wont be that bad. We could get a ten million guy and two seven million guys. This year we could have gotten revis and gholdson.

Not me. He's worth every penny whichever team hits the jackpot and gets lucky enough to sign him, He makes all 10 guys around him better, especially the front 7. The joke is on the Lions fans. Watch him to go the Seahawks or Niners and win a bunch of Superbowls once he's actually surrounded by good players and not Martin Mayhew draft picks. It's going to be hard to watch.

Very doubtful...if Suh wants to max out (can't blame him if he does), he'll end with a bad team with a lot of cap space...he'll make any DEF better, but how much better? If DET couldn't make the playoffs with him the last two years, you have to know that weighs on a GMs mind.

But would he take less to play for a contender? I think he just wants out of Detroit and will sign with a contender of his choosing for a respectable contract.....He could very easily get injured and screw himself right out of anything.

Yep -- completely agree. I also think he was offered more than Atkins, though I don't think it is necessary. If Suh's 1st contract wasn't so big because of where he was drafted -- getting the same contract as Atkins would be way more than enough to re-sign him, IMO.

Unfortunately -- I do not think Suh wants to be in Detroit and it doesn't matter what he is offered. I think he wants to be courted by teams, so they can stroke his ego and then go to the highest bidder in a location where it is good for his brand.

I think Detroit end sup outbidding everyone. I still don't know if Suh resigns though.

No DT deserves QB money. Plain and simple.....Let him walk and use the money to put together a E-ffing team instead of three superstars taking all the cap.......Suh has Albert Haynesworth written all over him once he gets paid.....He will be great this year.....He will get paid then stats will fall off....Fairley included......Fairley will do the same thing.

It's completely unfair to compair him to Fat Albert. Fat Albert was a nobody until the last year of his contract. Then went off that year and the next after Tenn franchised him. So in reality, they guy had 2 good seasons, both contract years. I think suh wants to be great, wants to be seen as great, and will work his ass off to get there. Fat Albert just wanted to get paid and only worked hard enough to get paid.

I just don't see that happening. I think what were seeing is a GM and a President trying to save their jobs.....It's about this year not future years.....

We can't afford this guy, If we pay him we are screwed for 5 to 7 years depending on the contract length.

Well Fat Albert and Suh and Fairley all have one thing in common.....Jimmy Schwartz.

Muzz once we see what he signs for elsewhere the contender question will be answered. Suh does a 12-13 mill contract elsewhere, no doubt he wanted to leave for contender. I feel the Lions have at least offered that range of money.

He takes 15-17+ plus from lesser talented team. It was all about money and not just the Lions screwing up and I would actually have to defend useless ass Mayhew for not paying that contract

No Doubt the Lions offered 12 or 13 mil....Thats very respectable. But if he signs 12-13 mil say in S.F. or Seattle that's a contender move.....15-17 to go to Dallas or N.Y. is a money move........

I'll be sick to my stomach if he signs a money move say for 17 mil to stay in the division......I don't see that happening but would nevertheless make me ill.

And this is why you are not a GM. The highest paid defensive player in 2014 will make 16 million a year, yet you want to offer Suh 18 million a year 'as a starting point'.

Richard Sherman just signed an extension averaging 14.25M a year. Patrick Peterson just signed an extension averaging 14M a year. As much as I like Suh -- No chance should he make more than either of those players.

Since Suh has been on the Lions -- they've had one winning season and it was the offense that carried the team that year, as Detroit came back from multiple double digit deficits at halftime to win games. I could see if Suh was the ring leader of a top 5 or even a top 10 defense, but Detroit's defense has been average to mediocre every year Suh has been on the team. What is going to happen to Detroit's defense without Suh? Will they be more average and more mediocre?

Okay Mr. Alwaysright. We'll see how much he signs for.

Miss the playoffs the last two years, but I think DET is a contender....but you could be right because his rookie deal was quite lucrative...it can't be just about money.

I thought they declined to re-sign him and draft Eli (which turned into Rivers) instead because of that shoulder injury? (Miami passed on him too for the same thing). I don't remember it being his decision to leave but I could be wrong.

Oh, it was the team's decision, but they let him go. Your position was that premium players (and Brees had been good to that point) were never allowed to hit FA after their rookie deals. You'll have to amend, I think.

Lions went out and got Van Noy and Ansah for a reason. I am more surprised they didn't option Fairly then I am they may not sign Suh. I still believe this is the last year for the 4-3 base for the Lions defense. I think next year they just get 3 fat asses to plug the middle and move Ziggy back to OLB. Use all that extra money to add a great CB. Should have done it this year really.

I think that's half-right. The newest trend in defenses around the league seems to be a hybrid defense that can go 3-4 or 4-3, depending on match-ups and opposing schemes.

New England and Seattle have done it for a few years, the Bills did it some last year, as did the Cards and the Jets, to an extent. I think we'll see it far more in coming years.

I said players like Suh. A severely injured Brees with massive question marks surrounding him is not a player like Suh.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Lions are willing to let walk-year DT Ndamukong Suh reach the open market next offseason.

Per Rapoport, the Lions want an "informed" Suh to "sign a deal he’s happy with." It's a bizarre tact, one that would all but assure Suh leaves as a free agent. Players of his caliber almost never hit the market. It's possible the Lions are simply tired of the Suh experience, but he's an irreplaceable presence up front. Jul 29 - 7:35 PM.

The Lions never make the playoffs, other GM's won't hold that against him. Watch him go to the Bears and end up ending Stafford's career.

Haha, good luck with that, Max... the blinders are full-on. All these players we're bringing up on his request will just be shot down as "not on Suh's level," no matter who they are. Brees was hurt, Sanders was 20 years ago, Peppers was not as young as Suh, Williams, well no viable excuses there yet, but I'm sure he'll come up with something.

Pretty much there's going to be something - age, team, time, position, etc... that will make them somehow less than Suh, who has been elevated from a great current DT to the greatest defensive player in the history of the world for the purposes of this argument...
