this kind of response is a mistake. If Brown had been born in 1960 and started his career in 1980 with more modern medicine as a kid, better nutrition, and modern training methods he'd have been a fast, monstrous 6-4 and 260 and he'd have bulldozed modern defenses like he did in the 60s.

Jim Brown

Never missed a game. Not one.

Led the NFL in yards rushing all but one of his 9 seasons. Tell me who of Sanders, Payton, or AP have come close. Payton exactly once, Sanders 4 times. I don't get the Payton love - he was the best running back in the league only twice when he played. He was great, but like Emmitt more the product of longevity than domination.

5.2YPC is the highest of any back with more than 5000 yards career. Barry #2 at 5.0, Walter an anemic 4.4.

8 times All-Pro in 9 seasons. Again, the next guy has to be counted third on the all-time list since he's that far behind, and that's Barry at 6 of 10.

Led the league in yards from scrimmage 6 times (Sanders and Payton 2 each).

Averaged over 100 yards per game. Barry 4 yards behind, Payton 16 yards behind. 16 yards per game behind Brown's numbers. I should stop comparing Payton at this point.

Led the league in all-purpose yards as a guy who didn't return diddly 5 times in 9 seasons. Sanders and Payton one each.

Receiving per game stats comparable to Payton and Sanders (21 vs 23 and 19)

106 rush TD in just 118 games destroys Barry at 99 in 151 and Walter at 110 in 190. 126 overall TD beats Payton or Sanders in far fewer games.

Barry fumbled less per game (one of the reasons he's really just MUCH better than Payton), with Brown and Payton comparable in fumbles per touch.

Barry Sanders is my favorite player of all time, but the comparison isn't close. It isn't close to being close. The question is not whether Jim Brown is the greatest running back of all time.

The question is whether he is the greatest player of all time.

Again, nope! He was in phenomenal shape, that's what made him so amazing in his day. Modern training would have made him grow 2 inches? The argument for Jim Brown is an old and tired one, look at what Leroy Kelly did the year after Brown retired, he put up Jim Brown type numbers. Jim Brown was an amazing player but he simply isn't the best there ever was...

I think I would remove Sanders from the list. Yes he was dynamic and dangerous. I just would rather have a more complete back. Part of being a running back is blocking for your QB. Sanders was never very good at blocking for his QB. I am a big Emmitt Smith fan, but I got guys like Payton,Faulk and Peterson rated over him.

Sanders was fun to watch, but he was liabilty when the Lions had to pass on 3rd and long. I lost all respect for Sanders when he quit on the Lions.
