Okay, so this is the final list.
Barry Sanders
Walter Payton
Jim Brown
Marshall Faulk
O.J. Simpson
LaDainian Tomlinson
Earl Campbell
Emmitt Smith
Marcus Allen
Tony Dorsett
Thurman Thomas
Adrian Peterson
Curtis Martin
Eric Dickerson
Franco Harris
Gale Sayers
All great running backs for sure. But certainly, the ALL TIME leader in yards per rush in the history of the NFL should be on this list somewhere, shouldn't he?...and by the way, after 6 seasons he's still going strong.
Jamaal Charles
So, every few days I will post a new matchup we will have the top 16 backs of all time go head to head to decide who is #1 in the eyes of the Hoop.
The 16 contestants are in no particular order.
Barry Sanders
Walter Payton
Jim Brown
Marshall Faulk
O.J. Simpson
LaDainian Tomlinson
Earl Campbell
Emmitt Smith
Marcus Allen
Tony Dorsett
Thurman Thomas
Adrian Peterson
Curtis Martin
Eric Dickerson
Franco Harris
Gale Sayers
Prior to posting the 1st matchup I will give everyone a chance to tell me why someone else deserves a shot over someone who is on the list.
Jim Brown
Jim Brown
Jim Brown
and also Jim Brown...........No one else has ever topped the run away train.
He ran through, over and carried some with him, he was the Mac Daddy of RB's .....
Carried some 190 linebackers with him and ran through 240 pound defensive tackles. Awesome but not #1 IMO...
I understand, but when you consider that the run was all they had, and everyone knew it was getting handed to JB, but even with putrid olines, they still could not contain him....
I can see Payton and Sayers in the same discussion, but Sanders didn't last long enough nor did he have the downhill ability of JB......But then I can't think of anyone else that did....Earl Campbell was as close as you could get to his style and ability IMO. All great but there can be only one #1 and that's JB in my book.
If you didn't watch Walter, you can't understand how great he was. He was on a great team for a few years, but the Bears stunk for most of his career. I know Brown was great, but I never really saw him play, but I can't believe he was any better than Walter.
P.S. Sayers was a great return man, but his career was too short to be on this list.
