I did a quick and dirty look through our 2008-2011 recruiting classes and made a few lists:
Our total commits in each class (number who left for unproductive reasons)
2008: 31 (16)
2009: 22 (8)
2010: 19 (6)
2011: 21 (4)
I considered players who did not leave because of graduation or early entry into the NFL as unproductive losses to attrition. Yes that means that OVER HALF of our 2008 class was unproductive. Overall more than a third of our total recruits in these four years (the backbone of this team) were unproductive losses. Some never made to campus because of grades etc, or prepped and chose to go elsewhere. Others came and left.
Here is a list of all of the losses and the category they fall into to the best of my memory:
LEFT TEAM
Ben Barber (WR) 2008
Xavier Boyce (WR) 2008
JuJu Clayton (QB) 2008
Lyndell Gibson (LB) 2008
Isaiah Hamlette (DL) 2008
Jake Johnson (LB) 2008
Joe Jones (DL) 2008
Quillie Odom (LB) 2008
Dwight Tucker (DL) 2008

Jerome Lewis (TE) 2010
Theron Norman (DB) 2010
Dominique Patterson (LB) 2010
Ricardo Young (QB) 2010
Adeboye Aromire (DB) 2011
James Farrow (DB) 2011
NEVER MADE IT TO CAMPUS
Austin Fuller (WR) 2008
Leon Mackey (DL) 2008
Derrick McCoy (WR) 2008
Kendrick Pressley (AT) 2008
Peter Rose (AT) 2008
Allen Stephens (LB) 2008
Tyrell Edwards (TE) 2009
DeAntre Rhodes (DL) 2009
Chris Hall (TE) 2011
Robert Lockhart (WR) 2011
GRADUATED AND EXPENDED ELIGIBILITY
Jarrett Boykin (WR) 2008
Eddie Whitley (DB) 2008
LEFT EARLY
Ryan Williams (RB) 2008
Jayron Hosley (DB) 2009
David Wilson (RB) 2009
As far as unproductive losses, we have 5-7 wide receivers (depending on where the athletes would have played), 8 linebackers (including guys who played at Whip) and 7-9 defensive backs. I am not sure how this compares to other schools, but it seems pretty staggering to me, considering the fact that we pride ourselves in getting underrated guys but the right kind of players. I am not sure what to make of this (SandC program issues leading to injuries, not proper scouting, pigeon holing players, or just plain dumb luck) but it is worth considering.
