Arizona Cardinals Just Hired the First Female Coach in NFL History

I am okay with this. But lets not fool ourselves in thinking this will rush in a new era of women coaching in the NFL. The fact is that Dr. Welter is an anomaly. There aren't other out there like her. What this could do is open the line of thinking for young women & girls that there just might be a place for them in the NFL coaching ranks. And then in a generation from now, we might see more women being hired on coaching staffs.

My take:

Becky Hammond is legit in the NBA. She played at a high level as a college and pro women's basketball player. I have no doubt she knows the game really well and can do the job. Like all coaching, it is about teaching, and she has the knowledge base to teach it. She just coached the Spurs team in summer league and they won the summer league title. She seems to be pretty respected.

Jen Welter sounds more like a gimmick. I don't doubt her passion for football, but we simply don't have the same infrastructure for women to play the sport and develop knowledge and skill as we do with basketball or soccer. So I don't see how she would really develop the experience to coach inside linebackers in the NFL. Seems like a stretch.

She has been playing "pro football" for 14 years. She was a LB coach for an IFL team. She also has a master's degree in sports psychology and a Ph.D in psychology.

I think she is as qualified as anyone else who takes coaching internships in the NFL. Again, this isn't an actual coach, this is a learning position that the cardinals fill every year with former players who want to break into coaching.

You make fair points, but I think her experience is just not on the same level as someone like Hammon, who was a WNBA all-star, an Olympian, etc.

On the broader issue, I think some people are stupid if they think women can't coach men's sports. Do you really think Pat Summitt would not have been able to coach NBA ball? Really? Look at some of the bozos we have with coaching positions.

In most of the tweets that has her on the sidelines, a banner is in the background. It says "Wiser Designs" That is my best friends older brother's company. They do custom framing. I think it is pretty cool.

Incoming sexual harassment lawsuit in no time. Men in locker rooms (sports teams) are constantly talking about chicks, sexually explicit things, etc. and you got the showers and everything. There will be some comment about railing the coach over a bench that she'll overhear, etc.
