So sifting through the madness since yesterday for the votes... I'm getting 5-6 votes for Ross, and only 1 vote for Warrick. I would have voted for Troy Edwards. But Ross takes it!

This is a toughie.

Steelers had this guy in the 2nd in 1984. Played one season. Maybe he's the guy?

Not much to pick from. The Warrior, who went #5 overall when they could have had Big Ben is a mistake, but is it really a bust?

Not worth his draft slot, but in his 3rd and 4th year he was at 875 yards and 1106.

Considering who they passed over for him....

But not a 'bust'.

Some names to consider...

Browns
Kellen Winslow Jr (1st Rd - 6th overall - 2004)
Only name that comes to mind for them... He played 10 seasons & was named to a pro bowl, but his overall production didn't match the expectations IMO..

Bengals
Mike Cobb (1st Rd - 22nd overall - 1977)
Sean Brewer (3rd Rd - 66th overall - 2001)

Ravens
Maxx Williams (2nd Rd - 55th overall - 2015)
Hayden Hurst (1st Rd - 25th overall - 2018)

Steelers
Ray Sydnor - (3rd Rd - 83rd overall - 1980)
Chris Kolodziejski - (2nd Rd - 52nd overall - 1984)

IMO...

It's a 3-horse race between Cobb, Winslow & Hurst. I'm going to vote Mike Cobb.

Cobb... Drafted in '77... played in 13 games and NEVER caught a single pass before the Bengals traded him to Chicago lol. Had little to no success in CHicago before moving into the USFL in 1983.

Winslow... 10 yr career & a Pro-Bowl nod... But never lived up to the expectations.

Hurst... Dude was trash, but his stats show a meager TE. Baltimore fleeced ATL when they traded him.

I struggle to go back to the 70's...just a different era of football...but that doesn't negate the facts of the matter.

Hurst, I feel like while hasn't lived up to 1st round billing, I'm not sure he had the same expectation as a similar 1st round pick like Winslow. Hurst has carved out a decent career, despite also being roughly 3-4 years older than Winslow when he was drafted (24 to 20) and is still playing. He has a chance to eclipse Winslow in a few categories, but likely won't pass him in yards or TD's.

Also, Winslow was selected 6th overall, while Hurst went 25th...so again, I think the expectation is different and likely should play a role here.

If we needed to add another Bengal, over Cobb, I might offer up Marco Battaglia. While he was a 2nd round pick, he came in after leaving the NCAA's leading all TE's in receptions, TD, and yards. He would be drafted and he would go on to post just 71 receptions and just over 600 yards in 5 1/2 seasons with the Bengals (only played in 8 games his final year). He would go to WAS for 3 games, and that would be it. A really long fall for a guy coming out of college was THE top pass-catching TE.

I lean Winslow - but I'm not dying on this hill (unlike Carter and Warrick...lol). I think it gets tough here because not a ton of TE's go 1st round, which really limits the pool a bit and causes a bit more nuance with the discussion/thought.

No need to repeat what you did as agree with most. I'd go Cobb, too (though cannot say I've heard of him).

Sean Brewer was another winner for the Bengals. Drafted in the 3rd round, and expected to compete for the starting TE gig...he played in just 3 games for CIN before being cut. Played just 3 years and finished his career with more career tackles (1) than receptions (0).

LOL - he also came into his rookie camp and the Bengals found out he smoked at least a pack of cigarettes' a day...Winner if there ever was one.
