Yikes Cincy has an owner that isn’t even a billionaire, that has to be rough, a cheap owner. Really isn’t his fault bc he doesn’t have the funds and more worried about profitability in a lower market.

Brown is "rich" because he's the owner, but it's the only reason why. Most teams have an owner(s) that made their billions elsewhere and bought a team...Brown didn't.

The reality is - the Bengals (Brown and Blackburns - his daughter, SIL) refuse to adapt to the modern NFL. In the 90's Brown refused to adapt to Free Agency. When Marvin came along in the 00's, he finally dragged Brown into the 21st century. Now the NFL is moving again, but in how the contracts are done, followed through/set up, and the cap manipulated. It used to be - the Bengals could sign a guy to a slightly lower deal, but because they never cut anyone - you were guaranteed to see the full contract. Usually this ends up being more than what other contracts looked like because those players never saw the final year of their deals that paid them very well. Bengals have moved on from this, but still insist that players play the full contract - which is no longer working since the Bengals cut guys before their contracts are up (like most teams). Bengals are going to have to play the game now, and adapt - or they will again enter another era like the 90's. It may not happen right away as long as they have Burrow...but if they can't get their shit together - I don't believe he'll be long for Cincinnati.

As for Garett - good for him, and the Browns - but they clearly overpaid - and had to - to keep him happy. When a player basically comes out and says the organization is full of losers and has no plan - how do you make him happy if he wants to win? Pay him a stupid amount of money on an offer he can't refuse. If you're going to lose, at least you can lose while making stupid amounts of money to wipe away those tears...lol

I don’t think Garrett is an overpay. He’s where he belongs - top of the scale at his position.

Fair - I guess what I meant was - it was a pretty sudden jump...but while he deserves to be up there, he also had a several years left on his contract...but, I digress...he's one of the best - for sure.

What makes this interesting now for Trey is two-fold: Would the Bengals get near that amount to keep him long-term? (No). But, will another team trade him for a 1st or 2nd (and likely another pick) AND have to match that kind of deal (or near it)? Not so sure anymore...could be he finishes this year out in Cincinnati and hits the market next year as a F/A...but he'll also be 32 next season...

Where I am on value now is this - the top end guys, the real perennial All Pros are likely underpaid. However, they set the market and the people who are directly underneath it end up being the overpays. Your guy Hendrickson probably not that much of an overpay though if he produces like he did last year.

17.5 and 17.5 in 2 years - he deserves to be paid. I get the hesisentancy though, he'll be 31 this season...and at a position that requires a lot of athleticism, that usually starts to dwindle at 30-31...how long can you bet on him? Sure, there are exceptions - but you can't bet on your guy always being the exception rather than the rule.

This being said - if the Bengals had just signed him to 29-30M, he probably signs, it's done...and then they don't have to worry about this. Same with Higgins 2 years ago, and Chase last year. If the Bengals would just sign their guy (even though they still have an extra year after the fact remaining) - they could be all signed long-term and would be playing at a BARGAIN ... instead, the Bengals continue to operate like a 1970's franchise as if Paul Brown were still alive (and honestly, that's not fair to Paul because he was an innovator and a guy who changed with the times...something I think Mike and family tend to forget far too often in there steadfastness to remain in control for his legacy).

Overpaid? Sure it sets the market. Others will overpay their DLineman now but none will be better than Garrett. For the Browns it was basically an extension with new money. Doesn't affect their cap except in future years when the cap will be crazy high and Watson is finally off the books. If there was a guy to overpay, they made the right choice. Unfortunately, the Watson deal ruined everything about this team.

You do know if he was traded he would still get big money...the new money was going to be there regardless lol. You don't give up a ton of picks and don't sign Garrett long-term

Yeah - agreed. I say overpay, but really - I admit it's splitting hairs. Crosby's deal was roughly 35M a year and Garrett is at $40. If I say the Browns overpaid, it's likely because I think in a normal circumstance they could have had him at 36 or 37M a year AAV...it took 40 because he was disgruntled. But, we're talking about 3M a year...not exactly breaking the bank by NFL standards...lol

Agreed...you are not trading and not paying/extending. That is the same as I mentioned with the Trey situation. Bengals will want at least a 2nd (and possibly 1 more pick) AND you have to sign him to something that is going to be at least between Crosby and Garrett...or at Garrett's value...I'm sure there's someone out there that is willing to make that happen - it only takes one.
