So I love war movies. I've watched a lot of them. But not all war movies are created equally. And for me there is a separation between best war movies and war movies I love to watch over and over again.

So here's mine.

Top 5 War Movies of all Time

1. Band of Brothers
2. Patton
3. Full Metal Jacket
4. Paths of Glory
5. Apocalypse Now

1. Full Metal Jacket
2. A Bridge Too Far
3. Black Hawk Down
4. Platoon
5. The Longest Day

I've seen most of the movies listed above. I won't break into two lists; here are my top 5, all of which I've watched multiple times:

The Man Who Never Was
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Five Graves to Cairo
36 Hours
Zulu

Honorable Mention:

The Siege of Firebase Gloria
The Hill

"I hate the British"
"Be happy in your work"
"I guess I would have to kill myself"

1. Glory
2. Saving Private Ryan
3. Patton
4. The Longest Day
5. Unbreakable

Great Escape
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
Glory

if I considered Band of Brothers a movie, it would be at the top, but it was a mini-series.

I love all of those.
Most of those seem to be WWII movies.

You are right. War movies are my favorite genre and WWII seemed to be best subject for me. So many epic battles with two theaters

while I loved Band of Brothers, it isn't a movie.

as a miniseries, it is extremely rewatchable though...even individual episodes.

Just to throw out an obscure war movie, I was really surprised by Overlord.
Zero expectations going in.
Pleasantly surprised.

My favorite. Remember seeing it in college with the original German dialogue and English subtitles.

Riveting.

Some new aged ones that I would rewatch every time I see it playing... Yes some of these are over-sensationalized films... But damn they are satisfying

13 Hours
Lone Survivor
Hurt Locker
Black Hawk Down
Zero Dark Thirty

Also watched The Seige of Jadotville recently and would recommend it.
