Lol! I was trying to avoid it because it is the kind of question that will send me into hours of research and internal debate probably ending with a list of 60+ movies divided into different subgenres.

.....but since I've been tagged, I'll check it out and get back to ya.
tenor.gif

As a side note, have you ever watched the YouTube channel CineFix? They post very good quality videos of top tens. My only gripe is that when they discuss it, each spot on the list covers a different subgenre. I would actually like it if I got a complete top ten of each subgenre. Knowing the #1s of those, I could obviously infer what the top ten of all of them combined would be like. I will include an example of one of their videos below.

This one is a top 5 and is a little different, as they mention the top 5 being basically classics so this top 5 is reimagined with lesser known movies. They have horror videos broken down into a few different videos too like top 10 movie monsters, scariest moments, horror tropes, death scenes, thrillers, movie villains, etc... Seriously, for everyone, if you are a fan of movies, I think you will appreciate this over crap channels like 'cinemasins' - ah, I hate that channel.

Nice list! I like the "hidden classics" approach.

So my top 10 list is pretty boring because they are generally obvious. I consider them all perfect. Oh, and there are 12.

In no particular order:
The Thing, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Alien, The Shining, American Werewolf in London, 28 Days Later, Misery, The Fly, Evil Dead 2, Jaws, Halloween.

Others contenders that I hold in high reverence.
Night of the Living Dead, Ginger Snaps, Rec, You're Next, 1922, Trick 'R Treat, Near Dark, Let the Right One In, Let Me In, The Loved Ones, Scanners, Frailty, Drag Me to Hell, Duel (early Spielberg!), The Train to Busan, Ringu, The Ring (parts were filmed in my tiny hometown so I'm biased), Carrie, Shadow of the Vampire, Hellraiser, The Exorcist, Phantasm, Dawn of the Dead remake, Christine, Susperia (original from '77), Rear Window.

..........so many more deserve mention!

The Universal Monsters, particularly Frankenstein (31), Bride of Frankenstein (35), The Invisible Man (33), Dracula (31) are serious classics. Also Freaks (32), and Nosferatu (22) are great.

I'll consider everything listed above as my very, very top tier of horror movies. I can't narrow it down any more without having an aneurysm!

7. Alien
6. Halloween 1978
5. The Conjuring 2
4. Seven

Carpenter's remake of The Thing (as well as the original from Hawks) is still my favorite. I can pop those fuckers in any day. I'd probably go the remake as I am a huge Kurt Russell fan. That guy is a living legend.

HEREDITARY!? That movie was stupid and boring as fuck all. I didn't get it at all.

Can we do a top 10 by decade? lol... Top 10 overall is going to give me anxiety.
by decade, by subgenre, whatever floats your boat.

lol at the notion of anxiety, Picking a top ten, doesn't mean it isn't interchangable and only about how you feel at that moment. If I went back, I would probably change quite a few on my list... 1408 might not even make it.

It was about the grandmother and her cult trying to bring the demon to life inside of the boy while sacrificing everyone else basically lol. It was really well made and well acted. Toni Collette was incredible.

All I got from that film was: "Mother bitches everyone out non-stop after son does the family a solid by wiping out his creepy nut allergic sister."

Alright @Blackshirts BLVD ... I literally shaved years off my life with this... Spreading it out by decade still caused pain. 60's & 70's I knocked out no problem... But it gets messy from there. I'll admit that I have never done this before because I knew it would become exhaustive. Nice. No need to get stressed about it. Given your list of HMs and 'stress' it seems like you almost don't want to let the genre down lol. Did you use any specific grading material or did you go off your previous reviews or was it all about how you felt at the time of writing?

I know what you mean in regards to the sci-fis and what not you don't want to leave out. Personally, I felt that Aliens was more of an action flick compared to the first that I would agree is more horror. So I have Aliens listed on my Action list.

The original Night of the Living Dead, in black and white.

Remember who played the alien in the original The Thing? It was James Arness, Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke. Face it, Chester, you wouldn't have been much as a hulking alien.

To be honest my ranks are a mixture of everything... Lots of it is nostalgia driven. The impacts these movies had on me at first viewing. I watched a ton of the 70s & 80s horror movies at drive-in theaters. Those experiences hold a special place for me. I did let my reviews play a roll in the latter stuff (2010’s mainly).

Alright @Blackshirts BLVD ... I literally shaved years off my life with this... Spreading it out by decade still caused pain. 60's & 70's I knocked out no problem... But it gets messy from there. I'll admit that I have never done this before because I knew it would become exhaustive. I tried to focus mainly on horror, but too many sci-fi thrillers & crime dramas kept popping in that I couldn't leave out lol. And I can guarantee that I'm forgetting a handful of movies.

One of my favorites too. An overwhelming feeling of dread throughout the whole movie. The blood testing segment had me jumping out of my chair.
