Same numbers as Bethea but hasn't ward been injury prone? Because Bethea hasn't missed a game in 6 years

Been in the league only four years...

rookie yr started all 16, 2nd yr missed 8 games, started 14 in his third n started all 16 last yr...

a real up and coming player

He also has started 96 straight games and since 2006 he has 804 tackles the most by anyone from the secondary. He will be damn good for us

I'll reserve my comments on this until the full details are out. I trust Baalke and co set up a good contract.

I wanna see how the deal is structured before I make judgment. It's a 4-year deal, but if they really only plan on keeping him for 1 or 2 I'd be much happier.

Now there's a crazy thought. All the posts on here citing total contract values are pointless. It doesn't matter what Ward got vs what Bethea got in potential total contract value. The reason there are so many different reports on Bethea's numbers is likely because of many incentives in it. How are we going to feel if Ward's contract has 19M guaranteed and Bethea's has 4M guaranteed and we can get out of it after 2 years at no cost to the team?

Please everyone, try to look at the big picture.

but the right player?

I like how a good few are "waiting" on details rather than being "excited" for this signing... just tells you how most actually feel about it.(no problem either)

It's too bad people are bashing the signing before they know the details.

Byrd signed with New Orleans for a reported 6 year/56M/28M guaranteed.

Not too excited about this one. Seems like a bit of a lateral move to me, I would have preferred Ward for this money.

I'm agreeing with this part. I'm not big on Ward and I couldn't care less whether or not we kept Hitner or let him go.

If the Niners were so quick to sign Bethea, that's gotta tell you something. It's obvious they wanted to focus on a player with better coverage skills. How much better is Bethea than Whitner in that regard, I don't know. But I'm definitely tired of seeing Whitner take the wrong angle to go for the bit hit. He toned that down somewhat this past season, but I wasn't expecting him to improve much in the future.

Pretty bug assumption to assume the money is somewhat equal.

I have always been a Bethea fan. I had my eye on him in the draft. I'm cool with the signing. I'm just really interested to see what happens at CB now.

I thought they said Ward signed a similar contract? Unless that is someone jumping the gun...

We'll as someone stated seemes like a lateral move. I don't hate bethea nor am I in love with him. Seems like a whitner signing of 3 yrs ago. But no way I would have wanted whitner at his contract. So if the money is right I won't mind it.

I believe that this is actually an upgrade. Bethea is better in coverage, better overall tackler (wont just go for the big hit to tackle though he does hit hard), can cover better, and better hands for ints.

Glad to see we haven't given up on the 2-3 year SS stop gap formula. Parrish/Lewis/Whitner would be proud.

Would be nice to have a homegrown talent that could play at a high level for 6-8 years though.

During the highlight video, the only thing I could zero in on was how he tends to tackle high far more then I am comfortable with. He seems to be the S version of Derek Smith, where he tackles everything around him but doesn't seem to make many game changing plays...at least not within the last 3 years or so.

I'll reserve judgement until I see what he brings to the team. Does seem like we over paid for an average player but ill try to stay objective till he pisses me off on game day.

With your name, it doesn't sound like that would take much. BTW, Grumpy's my daughter's favorite dwarf. I wanted her to like me (Dopey). ;)
