And 6 Mill a year for either Byrd or Bethea and we grabbed the turd of the two...

Did we have a shot at Byrd? Or Ward? Numbers may be comparable, but did they want to come? It's crazy how angry a lot of people are about this deal. No one really knows yet about specifics. I read Ward got 14 million gtd. We don't know anything yet.

He's not an all star. But he's better than Whitner in coverage. And less penalties. I like a few mid-round safeties this year. I don't see him giving up the long ball.

I'll reserve judgement until I see what he brings to the team. Does seem like we over paid for an average player but ill try to stay objective till he pisses me off on game day.

Not too excited about this one. Seems like a bit of a lateral move to me, I would have preferred Ward for this money.

There seems to be some confusion about the total number.

Differing #s being reported on S Antoine Bethea's contract. My guess: Deal has max value of $25-26 million, but some unlikely to be earned.

I just read this too...

49ers signed S Antoine Bethea to a four-year, $26 million contract.
Bethea will be asked to step in and fill hard-hitting Donte Whitner's shoes. He's definitely capable, but isn't a bone-crushing hitter and is coming off a down year that saw him struggle in coverage. Still, the 29-year-old Bethea is a nice complement to second-year FS Eric Reid. He's an all-around player.

Going to wait until the dust settles... but it isn't looking like a shit deal.

Gotta wait to see the details, but if true, I'd be pretty unhappy we landed Bethea. Ward is 2.5 years younger and probably the better player today. He's also local and probably would have strongly considered SF.

Bethea had over 100 tackles and 2int last year, he is a damn good replacement for whitner who got $7mil in Cleveland

Tackles don't mean all that much for a safety, IMO. Bethea seems like a serviceable replacement for Whitner. Ward is younger and I think better - admittedly I haven't seen a ton of either of them - and if he cost about the same, I'd be irritated we missed out on him.

I always liked Bethea as a player, more so a few years ago than now, but he's a HOME RUN personality in the locker room kind of guy. Very similar to Whitner in that regard. He's a coaches and personnel man's dream which helps explain why Polian graded him the way he did.

Everything I'm reading suggests that Bethea is at about the same level as Whitner, but for slightly cheaper. I'm liking Bethea's lack of penalties last year though. Seems like Whitner got penalized a bit, granted most of them weren't his fault.

I wanna see how the deal is structured before I make judgment. It's a 4-year deal, but if they really only plan on keeping him for 1 or 2 I'd be much happier.
