His contract shows the 49ers will be drafting his replacement this year. He has a 3 million dollar cap hit this year, 4.75 million next year, and then his base jumps to 5 million plus over the final two. This is a two year deal with 2.5 million in dead money in the third. My guess is that we get our strong safety of the future in the 2nd or third round. He learns on the bench this year, takes over next year and Bethea is released after they win Super Bowl 50.

I agree. its a 2 year deal maybe 3. No way it hits the 4th year.

i was just thinking and looking at all the contracts and i wish we spent the money on Verner. not that much more Bethea and we would of landed a 25 year old #1 CB. I still like the move but think it would of been better landing Verner

Does "#1" mean "zone" in the above post? Verner's a zone guy, not a man guy. Everyone was praising the signing for TB because he's the ideal cover-2 CB.

It looks like the total values are fairly close, but I haven't seen anything about guarantees or a breakdown of either contract. They may have both signed 4 year/23M contracts, but Ward's might be a legit 4 year contract with 13M guaranteed where Bethea's might be a 4 year contract with 5M guaranteed that we can easily get out of in two years.

Just bumping a post I threw up the day we signed him when I told y'all basically what the contract would be.

Now there's a crazy thought. All the posts on here citing total contract values are pointless. It doesn't matter what Ward got vs what Bethea got in potential total contract value. The reason there are so many different reports on Bethea's numbers is likely because of many incentives in it. How are we going to feel if Ward's contract has 19M guaranteed and Bethea's has 4M guaranteed and we can get out of it after 2 years at no cost to the team?

Please everyone, try to look at the big picture.

Again. I was a little off on the guarantees, but had the low guarantee/really a 2 year contract bit nailed.

Verner is one of the better CBs in the league. Just seems like the money would of been better spent. we been lacking a #1 CB for awhile and still one of our weakness on this D.

He's a great zone CB. How much time do our CBs spend in zone?

Their cushions are so large and they play so passively/reactively most of the time that its hard to tell what exactly the scheme is.

Antoine Beathea (S) to 49ers: 4-year, $23m with $6m guaranteed

We’re clearly not as high on Beathea as some with his average grade the past three years a -1.1 but that doesn’t mean it’s a terrible move. The small amounts of guaranteed money and the experience he brings ensures the 49ers won’t suffer such a big drop off when moving on from Donte Whitner. Though San Fran do tend to play both safeties we’d expect to see a bit more of Bethea around the line of scrimmage than they’ve come to expect out of their safeties.
