Sounds like the story of Patrick Willis' life

So long as he doesn't get burnt deep biting bad on PA, like Witner would once in a while, I'm fine with him.

I believe that this is actually an upgrade. Bethea is better in coverage, better overall tackler (wont just go for the big hit to tackle though he does hit hard), can cover better, and better hands for ints.

I honestly haven't seen enough of him. So I can't say much. It just reminds me of the whitner signing 3 yrs ago. Now we can focus on cb this draft

I thought they said Ward signed a similar contract? Unless that is someone jumping the gun...

It looks like the total values are fairly close, but I haven't seen anything about guarantees or a breakdown of either contract. They may have both signed 4 year/23M contracts, but Ward's might be a legit 4 year contract with 13M guaranteed where Bethea's might be a 4 year contract with 5M guaranteed that we can easily get out of in two years.

Bethea signed 4 years $21 million. There were wrong reports earlier about $26 million and then $23 million. But it has been shown on NFL network and other places at $21 million $8 million guaranteed.

I think this is a great signing. Whitner or Hitner as he prefers will be getting all sorts of penalties for the browns next year even if they aren't justified. We get the more mature, better tackler, and alot better in coverage IMO. Also a great locker room guy, knows what it takes to win, and will be by far the better mentor to younger players. I can't remember him ever in trouble, or in a bad light. He is a class act and a great fit for this D.

Whats good about this pick up is we get a great tackler and a better coverage guy. Word is he is a hard working and a good club house guy. He also had a better year then Whitner last year.

Great move Baalke.

I agree with Polian. He is a perfect fit for us. Wouldn't shock me if he makes the pro bowl next year for us. This kid is a tackle machine and better in coverage then Whitner. He is a good locker room guy and leader so we aren't losing much there. He just isn't that BIG hitter like whitner and that might be a good thing. In my opinion I think we got a better all around player. He is a great in the Box safety.

I wanna see how the deal is structured before I make judgment. It's a 4-year deal, but if they really only plan on keeping him for 1 or 2 I'd be much happier.

Good point and I agree about being much happier if the plan is only for a a year or two. The problem though is if it is a 4 yr deal, there is going to be some dead money if we cut him after two years. We'll have to wait to see how much but its just a waste

I read a quote that Bethea took 0 penalties last year, and Whitner took 5 unnecessary roughness penalties alone last year (some at critical times).

That alone is a MAJOR upgrade.

who cares if he is 30. Whitner was going to be 29. Its 1 year older. Also he plays safety not CB so I'm not to worried about age until he is like 33. So if we get 3 good years from him or even 2 I will be happy. This is a stop Gap. There were many better options out there. The guy can cover and he can play up in the box. Its a good get for the 49ers.

Antoine Bethea's new deal with the #49ers includes $6.5 million in guarantees, per source.

You totally missed the point he was making. He's far from being a "kid" - he's 30 years old.

who cares if he is a kid or not. I don't. All I care about is that he knows how to play safety in the NFL and that he plays it well.
