That wouldn't be horrible and Schmidt can still play at a position of need. Both were FA so it's not like Van had to give anything up. I'm sure there are a few deals around the league like that.

Exactly. Just off the top of my head I think Ristolainen fits that mold too on defense at least (though it sounds like the Sabres think he's worth a hell of a lot more). Might need to get a 3rd team involved because I don't think the Sabres have much use for Voracek, plus the Flyers don't get a backup goalie there. But I think stuff like that could work. Dallas has a lot tied up in goaltending with Bishop/Khudobin, plus Klingberg is in the rumor mill if they can't get him signed beyond this year.

The GM's are basically being forced to do that or not address their holes this summer. Particularly if teams like SEA are refusing to add cap without outrageous sweeteners.
