All of that said, that tweet by Meltzer is alarming. Some of these GM's are fucking nuts. It's no wonder that Seattle made no trades prior to drafting...

Seriously. The premium on cap space is way out of proportion right now. I don’t know if they budget teams just can’t take on salary which cuts back the teams that can’t take salary, but those prices are astronomical. York or a 1st to take on a 3rd pair guy that’s paid like a 2nd pair guy? That’s ludicrous.

Wonder what it takes to get someone to take JvR ?

I bet Fletcher isn’t really looking to move JvR to be honest. He’s one of the few guys that’s not “pass-first”.

He’s just more movable because he only has 2 years left. Compared to Jakes 3, at a bigger hit.

I have to assume Fletcher is looking to move everyone and anyone with a big contract including JVR.

This is just like when the price of oil went negative last year.

And for only two seasons at a cost of $6.5 million altogether. I think under the right circumstances, Ghost could actually earn that money. It's not as if he's a complete loss. At the very least he can help run a power play, dazzle a bit offensively and unleash a laser of a shot. He's very much a liability defensively, which is the true downfall.

It seems to me like Seattle is going to revisit some of these teams that are in cap hell and those teams are going to pay the Kraken to take some skilled veterans off of their hands. Call it a salary dump, but Seattle needs some skilled vets, has a ton of cap space and they could certainly use the picks and prospects as a brand new franchise.

I don't think we qualify as one of these teams.

The whole thing is insane but where was the kraken when this was happening? Shouldn't they be in on these deals if that's their plan? I think they should have taken a few more decent players held some cap and traded them for better picks. I guess we'll see but so far they sure aren't looking too good.

I saw a comment from Fletcher that the team will look very different com next Wednesday. That is the 1st day to sign free agents. With limited cap, he must think he can trade Jake and get some more cap relief.

Yep. Starts tonight at the draft. I think he wants to move the 1st round pick to help next year's team. Will be curious to see what happens.

If he doesn't move it, I'm hoping for Sillinger or Lysell.

And at the 13th pick, flyers trade it to the Kraken for taking Jacob Votacek

Fortunately I don’t think we have to worry about that scenario. Sounds like Fletcher expects to be able to move salary for salary to address roster holes.

Not sure who you would deal with that would trade contract for contract unless one team will end up eating a portion. Who would make sense though unless you were doing something like Jake or JVR for Eichel, but then I'd have to assume we'd be eating some portion of Eichels contract in Buffalo.

So far IMO the grades of the first 2 trades

Ellis for Patrick and Myers B plus

Ghost and a 2022 second round pick and a 2022 seventh round pick for nothing D minus

If the salary dump doesn't bring back a favorable return then it will be an F for failure. We'll see what they have left up their sleeves.

This is true but i think if you are going to pay a 2nd and a 7th for a salary dump we shouldve at least dumped JVR's 7 million or Jakes 8.25. Thats a lot to pay to dump Ghosts 4.5 cap hit.

Not sure who you would deal with that would trade contract for contract unless one team will end up eating a portion. Who would make sense though unless you were doing something like Jake or JVR for Eichel, but then I'd have to assume we'd be eating some portion of Eichels contract in Buffalo.

For example, something like Voracek (8.25) for Schmidt (5.95) and Holtby (4.3) from Vancouver could conceivably work. The Flyers address the two areas they want to address (top 4 D, backup goalie) and Vancouver addresses the need for help up front. The net difference is 2M on the Flyers cap, which they can afford due to the Ghost trade. I think I've seen that Vancouver is looking to move both Schmidt and Holtby to make room to improve their forward group. (their defense looks shit too, so I don't know why Gillis wants to do that, but maybe it helps the Flyers :))

It's not ideal because Schmidt and Holtby are both overpaid. Both had down years last year. But, there's a path to the Flyers being better off with Schmidt and Holtby than they are with Voracek if they bounce back a little bit. The cap is close to a wash. Maybe you have to add other pieces like draft picks to balance out the value, but I don't think it's outrageously lopsided either way, especially if you consider 2M in cap space is apparently worth a 3rd or 4th round pick if you gage it off the Ghost trade.

**I don't necessarily think this trade will happen. I don't know if it makes total sense from a Vancouver perspective because I don't follow them. And more importantly I think NHL GM's are doofuses that can't figure out straight hockey trades to save their lives (as opposed to a buyer/seller type trade). But something like that could make sense from a Flyers perspective. This is just an example of moving salary/players around without one team taking on a bunch of cap.**
