The wording on the article seems confusing. One paragraph suggests that he'll be competing with Wynns and Sabol, suggesting a minor league deal. Later, it suggests that they are merely depth in case he gets hurt, suggesting a big league deal.
Yup. Typical, essentially ignorant article.

I'm pretty sure as a GG catcher they signed him for the 26 man roster

I don't think that is an automatic. His bat makes it possible it is a minor league deal. I think it could go either way.

If it is a big league deal, here are the 3 most likely to get dfa'd, IMHO - Luis Gonzalez, Sam Long, Tristan Beck

The Giants announced that they've signed RHP Joe Ross to a minor league contract with an invitation to big league camp.

Wasn’t he signed by us a few years back to a minor league deal, but ended up opting out after not making the club?

No. He's always been with the Nationals prior to now.

Edit: I meant with the Nationals as a big leaguer. He originally was a Padre farmhand and was traded to the Nats in 2014-2015 offseason.

Maybe I am thinking of his brother…

Interesting that the Giants invited Joe Ross to big league camp when he had TJ surgery late May 2022. I doubt we'll see him in a spring training game.

But he will be in proximity to all the MLB coaches and med staff for evaluation. They will have a better idea of where he is at with his rehab and what his ETA will be.

If he had TJ in May, than I wouldn’t expect him to be MLB-ready until August or so at the earliest.

Pavlovic today:

The Giants haven't announced the Perez deal yet, but president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi previously had said he didn't expect any additional catchers on big league contracts, which would put the 34-year-old in the same boat as Austin Wynns as a glove-first non-roster invitee. One of those two will be Bart's backup, and while Wynns did a nice job in 2022, Perez is a two-time Gold Glove winner. He would seem to enter camp with the edge.

Projected OD Roster:

C -- Bart, Perez
chance: Wynns, Sabol
IF -- Craw, Flowers, Tyro, JD, VR, LWJ
chance: Diaz
OF -- Hebrew, Yaz, Slate, Meetch, Forto
chance: LuGon, Ramos
SP -- Webb, Cobb, Manea, Stripling, Disco/Wood
RP -- Doval, Trog1, Trog2, Brebbia, Alexander, JJ, Disco/Wood
chance: Waites, Hjelle, Long, Szap, Dabovich

Might not need 8 relievers early on with extra days off. Sabol could be the beneficiary here as he's LHH and can play a number of positions.

I think Sabol is about 85% locked into a roster spot. He can catch in a pinch, play OF, and I think can play 1B and 3B as well. And we lose him if he doesn’t make the squad.

He doesn't seem to fit with what FZ seems to be doing with the roster. Not sure a team wanting to contend this year carries a green catcher who has barely played at AAA. Whose spot do you see getting taken by him?

Probably an IR stint. Barring that, I would say LWJ might be the top contender.

That said, I don’t disagree that he isn’t a great fit right now. But we didn’t just take him in the R5 draft. We TRADED for him after he was taken in the R5 draft. We already gave up an organizational asset to add him to the roster. Dumping him now would make no sense.

What…

FZ is the one making the decisions?…

Never mind….

And, I think other orgs have traded for draft picks, only to return them in spring training. However, I'd have to research to confirm that.

But yes, FZ is in charge. He is more likely to return him in spring training unless he could stash him on the 60 day IL for the year, pay him the minimum big league salary and then return him to the Pirates.

This will be one of the big stories this ST. I think he breaks with the team but I'm not sure he stays up past the 13th. After that, we have 14 straight days before another day off. We'll need an 8th reliever, I think.
