Bassitt just got the QO from the Mets.

So we'll lose the comp pick we get for Rodon.

I don’t think it works that way. It is more complicated than that. The signing team only loses a pick if the player is signed to a certain level of contract (similar to the NFL structure for pick compensation). And the former team does NOT get that pick. The lost pick is forfeited, and the comp pick is a sandwich pick. Also, the market size for the signing team is a factor in what pick is lost (and I think the market is a factor in what pick is gained by the losing team as well).

Rodon
If the team that loses the player does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, its compensatory pick will come after Competitive Balance Round B. The value of the player's contract doesn't matter in this case.
--this pick would be in the high 70s.

Bassitt
A team with one pick in each round of the 2023 Rule 4 Draft would lose its third-round pick

--this pick would be in the high 90s.

Net/net: If we lose Rodon and sign Bassitt (or any other QO FA), we'd move up about 20 spots in the draft.

I think he could actually exceed his 2021 season by dint of not playing in the OF.

144 OPS+
1.3 WAR
-2.1 dWAR

reduce that dWAR to zero and you've got a 3 WAR player. Good value at $19M.
If this is so obvious why was LaStella the DH so many days and Joc in LF?

You are asking the wrong Hebrew, alt.
Only a Hebrew can answer this?

My point is, they don't seem to understand that Pederson is a DH.

It’s probably not very visible in the picture, but I just drove by Oracle Park and the scoreboard is illuminated with NPB star Kodai Senga in a #SFGiants uniform with the #41. It’s been reported #SFGameUp is interested in the free-agent righty and seems like a visit is imminent.

Assuming that the image is as you describe, (I believe you, but it is a bit blurry), my guess is that they are testing the image for his visit to the team. Not a leak of a signing that has already happened.

I did not think of this at the time but the addition of Isan Díaz to the 40-man roster makes it harder to believe that the Giants are prepared to keep Tommy La Stella this offseason.

I don't know about that. Its a trend this year to keep the top tier minor league free agents by adding them to the 40 man roster. Quite a few teams are doing that this year.

Díaz and Jason Vosler give the Giants coverage at all of the same positions that La Stella plays. Both hit from the left side AND both have 1 MiLB option remaining. There is a roster redundancy with La Stella, who is owed $11M in 2023.

Can't see him on the roster tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see if the Giants jettison anyone tomorrow to add guys to the 40 man roster. I agree that LaStella is a bit redundant, but, as you mention both Vosler and Diaz have options, giving the FO depth to the roster. I guess I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Luciano, at least, will be added to the 40. If he isn’t, the entire FO needs to be DFA’d.

No way that doesn't happen.
They have about 6 hours to do it. It will be interesting to see what they do to make space. tzill may be right that LaStella is gone but it would have to be a dfa. He cannot be non-tendered. That is only for pre-arb and arb eligible players. The whole point of tendering contracts is for guys who are not signed to long term deals (i.e. more than one year).

The Giants will have a busy day as both Joc Pederson and Carlos Rodón must determine what they’ll do with respect to the qualifying offer. Rodón will 100% decline it but Pederson is the type of player where accepting it makes a lot of sense for him.

As LHG points out, they will need to protect R5-eligible prospects by adding them to the 40-man. Marco Luciano, Luis Matos, Will Wilson, Hunter Bishop, Tristan Beck, Nick Avila, and Chris Wright are some of the prospects who are eligible for the R5.

Nick Avila is an under-the-radar prospect to get added today. Very strong 2022 season. 1.14 ERA with a 9.4 K/9 across 2 levels.
